W-G-N Orchestra

by Paul Lindemeyer

Harold Stokes directed a Jean Goldkette orchestra in 1928-'29 that was essentially a WGN studio unit, as well as making very good Victor records (some incorporating a contingent of McKinney's Cotton Pickers).

At some point later on, pianist-arranger Dave Rose took over as director, making an excellent (and rare) record of his originals "Jigsaw Rhythm" and "Shadows" for Bluebird in 1933. Louis Prima and Floyd O'Brien were on the staff then, and on this session. It also produced a few sides by the "Hotcha Trio" of Rose, Prima, and Norman Gast, a violinist.
