No doubt the book had its faults, for example the underestimation of Nichols and Mole (for which Schuller made amends in *The Swing Era*) and the near-dismissal of everything Armstrong did from 1929 onward, but it was still a pioneering attempt to look at early jazz through musical analysis rather than anecdote-heavy history. And with one footnote he practically began the rehabilitation of Whiteman...
