I don't have the book in front of me, but Lion's attempts to psychoanalyze Bix were annoying when I did read it.

Lion is a sort of 'alcoholism denier,' and will go to extraordinary lengths to ascribe 'deep' psychological causes to quite normal alcoholic experiences.

Sudhalter's relatively well informed grasp of alcoholism was a hugely refreshing antidote to the Young Man With the.... clich├ęs.

Not that Sudhalter isn't a little careless too. He mistakenly calls all> alcoholic seizures 'delerium tremens' which, in Bix's case, they cannot always have been.
