Bix left New York to join Goldkette in Detroit in early October 1924. A few weeks later, the Wolverine orchestra (sans Bix) appeared at the Loew Metro Goldwyn ball in the Astor Hotel.

George Johnson, the tenor sax man with the Wolverines, remembered the event in his article for Swing Magazine, 1936.
