Of the couple of Rolfe solos I've heard, when he plays a less 'salon piece flash' style, he keeps a clearer line going. Maybe enough to impress Louis.
Armstrong's absolutely full width and depth all the way up to F was startling to all hearers it seems. I've heard solo recordings of Herbert L. Clarke which are impressively full-toned at the top, but Armstrong was shocking by contrast.
Eldredge, Berrigan, maybe Russel Smith and Joe Thomas seem like a few who managed to incorporate this early on. So many 'screechers' are almost as thinned out as Rolfe.
