...if Rolfe was the inspiration behind Armstrong's early-1925 performance of "Pickin' On Your Baby", with Clarence Williams? It's much the most sustained demonstration, up to that point, of Louis' ability to play a melody in high range, at very moderate tempo, with no loss at all of tonal body and weight. If he'd had the chops left to finish the performance on high C (and if the song were not such an unfortunate [apologies] "pickaninny" piece), it would be a famous record and not a rarity.
