  • The Birth of "Bix Lives"

    • Posted Mar 30, 2006 1:48 PM

On Doug Ramsey's excellent blog Rifftides he wrote the following this week: "'Bix Lives,' read the graffiti after cornetist Bix Beiderbecke died in 1931. 'Bird Lives,' began appearing on walls in New York within days of Charlie Parker's death in 1955."

I'm curious to know if this is right, if the phrase "Bix Lives" was coined shortly after Bix's death. I have only ever read about it in conjuction with Bill Donahoe and the formation of the Bix Beiderbecke Memorial Jazz Band in 1971.

      Can anyone set me straight?
