  • stealing again and again

The example of Lester and Getz is probably an unfortunate one, now that I think of it. There is plenty of evidence that these
two really admired one another, and I doubt that Lester was really accusing Getz personally of stealing. The complaint was that Getz as a white person could make money on a style Lester himself developed (and suffered for), whereas Lester could not.

But there still is stealing at a societal level as I spell out, I think, where, because of the general situation of racial injustice, white musicians who further the message with all good intention and at the blessing of their black mentors/models/ideals, are still stealing.

I think, though, that we are dealing here with the beginnings of civil rights also: black musicians' great achievements are undeniable to in tune whites, who copy, and then other whites realize these original achievements and musicians for what they were and are.
So maybe "stealing" has good consequences in the end.
