Fred A. Berstein in the Op-Ed NY Times urges the United Nations to move to the Freedom Tower and 7 World Trade Center.
Bernstein notes the current U.N. Building needs $300 Million in improvements and that the U.N. long ago outgrew its headquarters and its offices are scattered in 6 midtown buildings. The New York State Senate earlier rejected a proposal for a new U.N. Tower at First Avenue and 42nd Street. Additional office space for the U.N. is handled by the United Nations Development Corporation.
Japanese architect Fumihiko Maki won a contest for to design the 35-story building which would house the U.N. until the Secretariat Building is overhauled.
Bernstein noting no tenants have been set for 7 World Trade Center or the Freedom Tower said the U.N. would be perfect so businesses would reluctant to move there given the site’s history. Berstein said the proposed 42nd Street U.N. site would pose security issues since it is over the Queens-Midtown Tunnel.
