WTC Foundation Board Member Debra Burlingame and International Freedom Center President Richard Tofel squared off in a debate on the Fox News morning program “Fox and Friends.”
The crux of the debate came down to one question:
Did the terrorists attack the U.S. or Freedom on 911?
Burlingame who raised concerns about politics taking center stage at 911 maintains the attack was on the U.S. Tofel, citing comments by President Bush, said it was an attack on freedom.
We of course agree with Debra. By shifting the focus off of 911, the whole point is lost. We have always been disappointed by the high handed use of the term of “freedom” (e.g., Freedom Center, Freedom Tower, etc.). There’s already a Freedom Trail in Boston which deals with the bith of the nation. There’s a Freedom Center in Ohio that deals with the underground railway for slaves. If anybody were to describe the events of 911 and Ground Zero, it would be “courage.” If they want to call it the “Courage Center” maybe we might be more interested.
