What do you think

I am posting this idea to get some other opinions from coaches. Last year I ran the double wing. At the pee wee level 9-11 year olds. We had a great year with it. I noticed some other posts in this form concerned with blitzes stopping the d wing. From my experience The problems ( running the toss play)came from pulling the back side guard and tackle at this level. From watching the films of 3 different d wing teams including mine, I noticed the guard would make it to his block usually with no problems, the the tackle would rarely make it to his block, he would get caught in traffic on the way there, or in some cases he was too slow to the point of attack. My idea for this season is to have the play side tight end block down on the defensive tackle, have the playside wing block the outside linebacker have the playside tackle cross behind the te end and pursuit through the hole and double team the outside linebacker with the wingback. the fullback would kick out the defensive end, The backside guard and quarteback leads the ball carrier through the hole. ( the backside tackle doesn't have to pull, now can give backside protection , without losing any numbers at the point of attack) I know this was kind of long, sorry. Please let me know what you think.

Coach,

I ran the D-Wing with 8-9 yr olds. 10-1, 2600 yds rushing, 47 td's. We never ran the the Super Power, just the Power ( QB hads off and fakes a bootleg) I am not claiming to be an expert but I studied this offense for 5 months before I installed it , I bought the playbook and Video from H. Wyatt. If you have not read his tips page, you need to.

If your pulling tackle is getting hung up in traffic, your playside line is not getting the proper surge off the ball. I can understand if he is too slow to get there before the wing back because that happened to us too. We kept working on it, and mid-way through the season the problem was almost non-existant. With the proper alignment, inside hand down, inside foot back, 6 inch or less splits, backed off the ball as far as legal (linemen heads must break plane of centers waist) and the ball carrier staying square and gliding parallel to the line untill he hits the hole, even a slow kid at tackle should be able to turn up field and wall off to the inside before the back passes him.

it seams to me that as long as your line can move then your backs will follow them down feild. moveing up an age group just means that the game gets faster. if you moved up with the same players then there should be no problem with your offences.

Try Running the Single Wing Offense

Coach,

If it's not to late, try running out of the single wing. I coach youth football on an Army base which means I have a new team every year because of the military moves. My line typically runs smaller than yours however we have beaten some of the top teams in Northern Virgina (McLean, Arlington, Herdon, and Alexandria, to name a few). Over four years we have racked up an amazing 53 - 7 record and have never finished less than 2nd place in four years (two second place finished and two conference championships). In fact in our first year I had exactly 12 players and won the championship with those 12 amazing kids using the single wing.

Plays for D wing gun

Its not much different than a normal 2 wing but the 3B stands next to the QB. U have 2WR though. You can do bucks and 3b traps the same way as normal and jet flips (not a bad play) where the QB flips to the wing man running the jet. U can also run many alabama options out of gun. It is a great variation and if you have a center who can snap it, I highly reccomend it.

Iwould like to purchase any material on the singlewing offense that you may have.Imyself always have only 12 to 15 players every year.Any information on installing the singlewing offense would be helpful as well.JDAVIS@4USAMAIL.COM

i have read your mail and i think you should stick with it. You do not say if you have the same presonel, however, size can be replaced with speed and technique.Maybe you add in some extra passing to keep the D from continully blitzing, otherwise work with what you have and what you know works for you! I am sure your player will fill out next year, and then they will be ready!
good luck

coach,

this was my first year trying the DW, and i had the same thing go on...half the problem was my backs trying to run outside the kickout, and the other was i found i was getting chased down...so i stopped pulling the backside tackle, and instead, had him fill for the backside guard which i had pull, and had the backside TE block the tackle's man....and i had the playside TE block down if there was noone on him, the wing would either help the TE with his man or get a LB, making sure he forced the DE to go around him to the outside so that the it made the kickout by the FB easier, then the pulling guard would lead thru the hole, and i started making the qb pick up backside instead of trying to lead....(that action also set up a qb bootleg play)...it worked well once i drew up a map for the backs to follow...i had never pulled ANY linemen before, so it was a new experience...i definately recommend keeping the backside tackle home, unless he's faster than your backs, in which case, why is he on the line in the first place?...lol
