It makes the horse the national colors. But, why? It could possibly to imitate the national banner and/or the one on the lance. Looks like it could also have been to hide wounds on the horse???

Or maybe when ferriners pointed at the painted ponies and laughed it just pissed the troops off enough to be really battle ready!!
