Edge play is a highly contested subject for the BD/SM community, for a number of reasons, mainly in my own eyes.
Now bear with me, because this is more than likely going to sound a little vague at times, and rarely make sense, unless you can follow how I think, which not even I can do at times. chuckling
To me, personally, edge play is anything that is at the furthest reaches of what is commonly acceptable to a given situation. In this situation, BD/SM is the given, and the edges are as well defined as they would be in, say, the music industry. Okay, so that's not as well defined as I thought, after a moment's thought about it. Anything that goes to the edge in the music industry simply becomes a cross-over title. But at any rate, back to the topic at hand.
Some of the things that come to mind for me when edge play is brought up are as follows:
Beastiality
Suffocation
Sensory Deprivation.
Blood play (a personal favorite, since I openly admit to having a true blood fetish.)
Being an animal lover, and by feeling closer to my animal friends than most of my human friends, I don't overly condone beastiality just on the basis of what it is. But it's one of those things that I can't dictate on, and wouldn't even if I could. Not up to me to judge what is right or wrong in personal lives, since I sure as hell don't want that kind of judgement put into my life. Your kink ain't my kink, and I just leave it at that, whether I like what you do or not.
Suffocation is beyond dangerous ground in my eyes. That is pushing the envelope to the furthest extremes I can imagine. But at the same time, the adreniline rush that comes from it can be intoxicating. Fight or flight responses come from that situation, and I can see the allure of something that dangerous, to be flat honest. Again, definately not my cup of tea, but for the adreniline rush factor, I don't know if I can think of another action that can truly compare. Again, I might not completely condone it, but if it's yer thing, that is pretty much all that matters, I suppose.
And now for blood play. It's about the only time that I can even conceive of being submissive for a scene, simply because I am putting my life in the hands of whoever I hand the blade to. Being a masochist to the extreme, the pain is honestly nothing to me, and is actually quite arrousing. The taste of blood just does something to me, and I can't really explain. I know, because I have tried to explain more than once, a couple of times to the authorities.
Since about the only "edge play" concept I enjoy is blood play, at least that is what I call it, I don't know if I can truly give too much of an insight into the whole thing. I can just give my views on it, and leave it at that. If you can understand it, cool beans. If not, well, you'll just have to keep looking for answers, I guess.
