I am talking about the Levitical Priesthood, which, although patterned after pagan priesthoods of the time, was simply a body of civil servants for the government of the covenant nation Israel. When the covenant nation fell into non-existance upon Solomon's death, it's civil administrative body(Levitical Priesthood) ceased to exist also.
Upon the fall of Israel, the civil administration of the two new kingdoms, fell to the same group of people(Levites) by tradition alone. It is my opinion that the ridiculous idea was here established, that the two, warring, enemy, kingdoms, were actually just one divided kingdom, and therefore still God's chosen people. A priestly lie designed to perpetuate the appearance of "devine" authority that the priesthood had enjoyed before the fall of Israel. The priesthood kept the two kingdoms in the dark until both kingdoms were destroyed.
It only became obvious when Judah was finally destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar, that it had never been covenant Israel.
The Abrahamic covenant is not conditional, so therefore it cannot be broken. God simply promised, presumably from foreknowledge, that all the nations will be blessed by a great nation of those who share Abraham's faith, which has everlasting possession of a specific piece of land. Abraham will be the father of many nations when the promised great nation, on the promised land, blesses all the nations with peace on earth.
The story seems quite clear to me:D
