Apart from death the cross was designed to cause great suffering and helpless humiliation. When we are crucified with Christ we go through a similar experience. That experience only finds an end when we learn to give unconditional forgiveness to those who caused us suffering and humiliation. Once our heart is made pure God begin to give us the mind that can follow him. JB
