Sounds kind of ridiculous at first but then ... when you think about it ...
A young buck newspaper reporter might believe whatever he's told by anyone ... as long as it's a really good story!
After being caught a number of times though ... writing false stories and getting a backlash, he would tend to become more cynical, less trusting and more demanding on corroboration of what he hears.
Does he "choose" what he's going to believe? Or is it a bit of something else?
