Response to twelve step programs
All of these would seem to be rooted in the human spirit, but whether they are acquired or already there in embryo, I don't know.
A.A. type programmes are successful for some, but not the majority, but is this the fault of the programme? Folk can only do their best as they see it from their own experience.
Prevention, of course always works, but human nature being what it is......
Addiction does seem to be able to be overcome by strengthening of the spiritual nature - this need not include religion - the inner resolve gains determination to just 'stop'. Many addicts reach a point where they simply cease the particular habit, then avoid all temptation to go near it again.
The crux seems to be that if you would 'like' to stop, then you probably will not - but if you really 'want' to stop, you are already half way there.
