No, their belief WASN'T logical

and that was born out later by logical reasoning of the evidential facts.

Little "signs" indicated that their belief wasn't "quite" correct and it was these little things and deeper investigation of these little things that led to the discovery -(logically reasoned only, mind you) ... that the earth COULDN'T be flat. It HAD to be round in order to satisfy the little evidential indicators.

They couldn't PROVE later on, that the earth was a sphere; they only reasoned that it had to be, from all the physical indicators.

Today, of course ... we've proved that it's a sphere ... by putting stuff into orbit.
