Paul is the one who says 'try the spirits'.

Personally I do not see that as scripture, I see it as a huge mistake that appeals to our ego. Satan is a powerful adversary and We can all be deceived. As soon as we think we can discern (try) the spirits ourselves, we are already deceived.

Reading the next verse, the writer goes on to claim that every spirit that confesses Jesus is of God - I don't believe that to be true either - the demons often hide under the mask of Jesus.
"This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."

I must trust in The Lord completely to do the discerning and to keep me safe. Without Him, I haven't got a chance.
