I came across a site where a fellow "helpfully" created a kind of diary on his own computer problem discoveries and fixes.
He had a problem with his computer -it was DEAD!~
He immediately checked his power supply and it was ok ... but he couldn't make it work with his motherboard. The power button wouldn't work.
He switched power supplies and got the same thing.
Finally he found that his CDROM drive was SHORTING the power plug to it. He unhooked that and immediately he had a fine system again.

Read that page and then go to the NEXT one at the bottom. He has a new problem on the next page ... a power supply that's INADEQUATE ... and it "wrecks" his hard drive!
Bottom line ... if there's an inadequate or dirty power supply or a device sucking too much current (also causing or creating potential ripple/hash) ... the safety built into the power switch SHOULD prevent a user from turning on his computer ... and thereby save him from corrupting his OS and stored data.
