The town that theology built.
It's very odd that the 4 Gospels make MUCH of "Jesus of Nazareth" ... insinuating that Jesus from any other location if not the correct Jesus. Only by invoking the name of Jesus of NAZARETH ... is divine inspiration forthcoming.
Yet ... Nazareth is nowhere ever mentioned in the OTestament and no other books in the NTestament mention Nazareth either, outside of the 4 Gospels and a bit in the book of Acts.
Archeological digs show no sign of any town or city ever having been located in the first century, under the present day city of Nazareth. It appears to have sprung into existence through the efforts of theology alone!
Josephus never mentioned it ... despite having spent considerable time in the town of Sepphoris, just a few miles away. It appears that the Nazareth location was a graveyard for Sepphoris, in the first century. A LOT of stuff happened at Sepphoris in the 68 - 70 AD rebellion. Had Nazareth been a viable town or metropolis at that time, it's nigh impossible that it would have escaped Josephus' pen.
So what is the secret of Nazareth? Why did it become THE PLACE for Jesus to have grown up in, in the Gospels?
Perhaps the answer to that question would come from the Ebionites. This sect MAY BE the birth source of Christianity today. It wasn't Paul's Christianity, mind you but it may have been the source for the Gospel stories.
Perhaps one day, archelogical digs will turn up a repository of writings under the present day city of Nazareth, equivalent to the Dead Sea Scrolls ... which will finally give us the answer to where the Gospel Jesus came FROM!
