loved the interview. but even before i saw that i was going to say, you ought to keep doing pcopy!

it's not everything i wanted from it, but it's still pretty good. also i thought the ascii art of the house was awesome, but then looked for who did it, and it said myst... but myst never does ascii art so who did it for him? :)

Galleon was great one to interview.

by (no login)

Not as bad for anyone i have interviewed before, they all has been great peoples and talking with them has given me lot's of knowledge with pure pleasure.
But Galleon was uberneat to interview, since he's way to tell and talk is stright and he also says what he thinks, he does not think what to say so much.

Not so offensive (polite but not too polite) as i might be often, but still, direct and stright. Just as man who is developing a QB64 should be.

After this interview, i was convinced that QB64 will be great. (for the record, Galleon was pretty unknown for me before this interview. One reason why i wanted to do it so much).

You could change the zoom to 90%

by qbguy (no login)

That makes it small enough to fit in a maximized window at 1024x768 and the text is not that much smaller.

Pretty soon I'm going to need to by a two-story house, chop out the first floor ceiling, and buy a two-story monitor. Fortunately, larger monitors don't cost anymore than glasses and eye exams; so, I'll keep enlarging my monitor! That, and I don't have to have a monitor rest on my nose.

Great work people, I couldn't write all that content if I had a rolling pin to my head.. I know the phrase is "gun" but that changes after you're married.

Pete

PS: Neat forum board, too and on my Fire Fox and IE6 the font-size looks fine. 19" monitor and 1024 x 768 resolution.

One of the submission might have played tricks...

by (Login MystikShadows)
R

the width of the magazine is set to 90%$ of the width of the browser, not a fixed amount. so it's "supposed" to adjust accordingly, unless an image or a table in an article is forcing things to stay wider than the original 90$ (a table with a fixed width instead of a % width for example)....

What screen resolution are you using?

QB Express #28

by Pete Berg (no login)

It's May, QB Express #28 is here!

http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/express/issue28/index.html

This issue is full of wonderful things, like SEVEN tutorials and FIVE articles, all about QBasic and FreeBasic.

Pritchard teaches us about Game Camera Systems; Imortis Inglorian brings us "Bitflags and You"; Kiyote Wolf gives us the rundown on his method of "Amazing Cheap Texturemapping"; Lachie Dazdarian contemplates the eternal struggle of "The Game Developer versus the Programmer"; Mac gives us the skinny on the QBasic.com forums; notthecheatr starts his series on "Scripting Solutions for Games" with "Part I: Rolling your own interpreter"; and Pritchard talks to us "About Design."

It's a fun-filled, jam-packed issue. Read it all in QB Express #28!

QB Express #27 is now available

by (no login)

The March issue of QB Express is here!

http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/express/issue27/index.html

This month, we've got a collection of fantastic articles and tutorials that pack quite a whallop -- so watch out! This may not be the biggest QB Express issue that's ever come out, but it certainly is no slouch... with SIX tutorials and THREE articles, as well as one of the biggest news briefs sections we've had in a long time.

MystikShadows reviews Dabooda's game Sokoban; Mentat brings us "Going Deep: Football and 3D Graphics"; Hezad teaches us how to generate awesome moving plasmas using the Electric Field equation; Wallyfblu teaches us about Window Procedure; Dean Menezes brings us "CGI and QBasic"; and Kiyote Wolf helps us reinvent the Commodore Wedge. And as always, we've got all the latest news from around the QB and FB community, and much, much more.

Read it while it's hot -- QB Express #27 truly delivers a knock-out punch!

I'm the webmaster of Cyperium a new QB forum (also a Nintendo forum), I would like you to add programs that you have made.

My idea is that you add one game per thread so that others can comment freely :)

The forum is located here:

The main site is here:
http://www.cyperium.com

The best programs in the forums will be shown in the main site under the QB section.

I hope you enjoy it :)

I wondered

by (Login MystikShadows)
R

When I first read this, I didn't pay attention to who wrote it. I thought it was a general post. I didn't think it was aimed at my post about the basic think box.

The description says it all, and of course you can talk about QBasic there, QBasic and all QB compilers. it has everything it needs to be deemed a QBasic forum though it's not limited to that family of compilers.

The title of the sub forum is Magazines and other QBasic forums. I didn't know you were unanimously excluding everything else. If you don't like the place or the post, just delete them don't there's no need to get in this frame of mind about it.

By now I hope you realize I'm not here to cause problems. So I'm not quite understanding this post here. Care to elaborate on that?

maybe you'll get a reply if you email him, just make sure to thank him for an answer

by mennonite (no login)

thanking people is gracious, i agree. refusing to answer because someone forgot is petty, but someone's right. berating people about "thank you" isn't really gracious, but then no one really cares about manners. i would settle for noobs not being treated like total crap, but what's that got to do with being gracious?

but since mac isn't replying, you better email to check that you didn't miss a "thank you" one time that he bestowed one of his holy ĺnswers upon you.

For someone who claims to be against censorship, you appear to me to be a bit hypocrtical.

by Pete (Login The-Universe)
R

It seems you have no problem telling others what they should say or think or do. That's not exactly censorship, but if you sneezed from there, censorship will have to wipe the snot off its face.

Anyway, this is really a discussion between Steve and Mac, both friends of mine. I'm sure they will work it out, on their own.

for someone making a point about censorship, you seem to be telling me to stfu

by mennonite (no login)

you used to be a pretty bright guy, pete, capable of seeing more than one side of an argument.

these days, you can still see one side, but it's your backside. i appreciate your point, one-sided though it may be.

i was merely pointing out that mac is a bit of a jerk to treat a voluntary answer as some kind of debt, and then tell everyone not to bother answering people that simply forget to post "thanks." but i did say it's his right to be petty.

hey you know what? it's his right to be a jerk too, just as it's mine to comment on it and yours to fail to understand the obvious. hooray for open posting. i'll leave mac and myst to it, but we can talk more if you'd really like to waste some time. i'd be just as happy for you to piss off and get a clue, but don't think i'm trying to censor you. post all you like!

Stop the censorship argument. It'll get nowhere very quickly.

by rpgfan3233 (no login)

Just think about it. If you're against censorship, then you want to get rid of it right? But that means you want to censor censorship. It is too paradoxical to argue about. I just wanted to note that no matter which side you take, it is inevitable for you to support censorship in some way.

it's a perfectly valid argument that you're making into something else

by mennonite (no login)

something pretty stupid.

no one is 100% against censorship. i am against posts being needlessly deleted in an ever-expanding anal-retentive policy of making the forum more and more and more and more formal, not to mention policed and striken from the record by ted's retirement gestapo. that's far from an all-out cry against censorship, but yes, censorship is the game ted is playing.

now i wouldn't think you're too simple to figure that out, but here you are telling me not to talk about censorship, only i didn't bring it up, pete did, because he thinks telling mac and co. they are ass-holes for berating people about "thank you" is hypocritical because i'm "against censorship." well i am, but no one is 100%. there has to be some kind of reasoning. in this case, mine is that mac is absolutely crap about what to delete and what to leave there.

if pete had made this about how i'm hypocritical because i'm an ass-hole telling someone not to be an *******, he'd be right. only i'm fine with mac being an ass-hole, generally speaking. my complaint wasn't about him being an ass-hole, it was about his obsession with "thanks." and as far as keeping to my own rules, if mac wants to be an ass-hole there's no way i would tell anyone, including mac to delete such a thing.

but apparantly in order to have any stance on censorship, which again, i didn't make this about, i have to also like everything, otherwise i'm a hypocrite. i guess pete's reason has seen better days. and yours? well, everyone is entitled to miss what's going on now and then. pete's basically told me that in order to have a right to complain i have to not say anything. now that rpg, is the freaking paradox. think about it next time.

Crap, now I'm the loser! Oh well, looks like I saved your ascii again, Mac.

Flame wars are like tennis matches, the last guy to hit the ball over the net is certainly not the loser... well, provided he hits it in the court.

QB Express #26

by (no login)

The twenty-sixth issue of QB Express is now available!

http://www.petesqbsite.com/sections/express/issue26/index.html

It's been over three months since the last issue, but it definitely was worth the wait. This issue features one of our largest News Brief segments ever, as well as NINE articles/tutorials, covering topics such as "The Art of Rounding"; creating your own Worms-like scrolling engine; using FMOD to play sound in your Freebasic programs; Database indexing; programming spring physics in FB; and functions with local variables.

QB Express is definitely getting back on track, and I think this issue will prove that.

You can read it all in QB Express #26!

Service Update
Late last week the ISP had some electric/power issues due to weather. This caused the computers where the database for the forums as well as our backups to go down.

We've been working with them to try to restore the data, but they haven't had any luck yet. In the meantime we approached Lefora to help with a temporary solution as you have seen here. They put up the front page so at least you had some idea of what was up.

So currently the ISP is going to send the hard drives from where our stuff was hosted to us. We will try to get a professional to see if its even possible to retrieve any data.

The summary is that its looking slim that data will be 100% restored. We might get bits and pieces, but who knows what those pieces are. So the alternatives are this:

Go somewhere else. I'm assuming some of you have already, and I don't blame you.
Wait to see what happens with the hard drives (no ETA on this).
Work with the Lefora folks to re-establish your forum. They have told me they are coming out with a more traditional forum style next week and all new data created would move into the classic look.

loved the interview with pete

by mennonite (no login)

part of the thing about being a media whore (oh i respect that, it's his pimps i take issue with) is that you occasionally have to change your message to something a little more progressive. pete's certainly done this:

"I dont program in BASIC anymore, even though I run a site about QB and FB. The last time I've coded any significant project in QB was way back in 2001 or so," - new interview

three years before freebasic came out, so he knows what he's talking about:

"That said, I also believe that FreeBasic is a much better language than QB at this point, and I think that the people recommending new users to switch to FB do have a good point. If I were a new BASIC programmer, I certainly would start with FB -- for compatibility and user support issues alone." - new interview

"Your allegations that FB is unpolished, difficult to use, and missing features because it's still in beta, are unfounded." pete in qbe 15

yeah but have you used it?

"I suppose I've always been more interested in the QB community, and helping other people share and promote their programs than in actually coding myself. At this point, I run my site and QB Express out of a sense of loyalty to the QB/FB community more than anything else."

although this is an avenue only open to pete. it's one thing to take the community seriously if you're just a fanboi, it's another if you actually still code in basic, as pete makes clear to me in qbe 16:

"I guess I never knew how emotionally invested some people get in web forums. I consider the Qmunity and QB Express to be a hobby and a leisure activity; I don't really take any of it all that seriously... The "Qmunity" is not real life, so you probably shouldn't treat it as such."

but pete's allowed to miss the point now and then. i like how he defends all the critics of freebasic (or at least, people that want to still use qb) lately, at least the ones that came out later:

"You need dissenting voices, and critical people who are not afraid to speak their minds to have a functioning society. Otherwise it starts resembling some kind of totalitarian regime where a few people make all the decisions, and everyone just follows blindly." - new interview

except of course,

"(Aside from that whack job mennonite.)" - pete on his forum, a month or two ago http://www.petesqbsite.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15718#15718

now what is mennonite's problem? well, i don't like like the problems that started around freebasic, i don't like elitism, i don't like it when people abuse noobs, and neither does pete:

"I dont appreciate it when a QB newbie posts a question, and the other users make no effort to answer the question, instead just recommending them to use FreeBasic."

"I would appreciate it if you guys would stop arguing with each other about which programming languages are allowed, and maybe..."

"...try to answer each other's questions for once." - new interview

pete can say that, and that's great. pete should say that. i tried to say it in qbe two years ago, but,

"And what's wrong with RTFM responses?" - pete's reply to me, qbe 15, 2005

"I don't take anything that's posted on a QB/FB forum to be "elitist" or "extremist"." pete's reply to me in qbe 16

"I could definitely see myself programming a game in FreeBasic sometime...we'll see."

maybe when he tries this, he will *finish* making my points for me two years late. that is if it's not a bunch of if thens like his last game. (oh nothing wrong with that, but i'm sure freebasic will compile it. you have to start going being if then print to get freebasic to bitch at you usually.)

"As for QB users switching to FreeBasic, I think it's very a good thing. FB is a more powerful and accessible dialect of BASIC, and it's almost completely compatible with old QB code."

(so i'm told...)

"But now users have the ability to access tools like OpenGL, so they can make professional-looking games much easier. There are a lot of FB haters out there, but the way I see it -- what's not to like?" - new interview

oh i dunno, why not ask galleon?

although pete does have the right idea a lot of the time:

"I would much prefer if it people either answer the question being asked (no matter what language it's in), and dont criticize people for the programming language they've decided to use. (Basically a "If you dont have anything nice to say, dont say anything at all" policy.)" - new interview

i wish he'd had the right idea sooner:

"You're like the Amish: still living with no electricity and horses and buggies because it works. You're just too set in your ways. Computer technology has advanced past DOS, and it has gotten way better. You're the only person I know who thinks a DOS command line interface is more "user friendly" than Windows. And you're way too angry and defensive about the whole thing." - qbe 15

actually it's freebasic that has a horse and is buggy (another pete came up with that)

but today i have a right to use whatever language i like, thanks to pete berg!

"Pete dont let anyone tell you your programming language is dead. If you are still using it, it's alive!" - new interview

now that's the kind of progress i'd hoped to see out of freebasic.

but you can't blame pete for making progress. i don't! that's not my complaint. i do have a bit of trouble resolving the above with this:

"As for the flame wars and the arguments that always happen in the FB community, it's inevitable, and perfectly healthy for this type of thing to happen in any sort of community. Not only does it add interest, but it creates a sense of competition and one-upsmanship that encourages innovation. Where's the fun in everyone always just getting along and complementing each other?"

personally i think a bit of flaming is like sh*t, it happens. there's no way around it but to let them burn out and try to get along. still it's pete that thinks they're a good time, except when i'm part of it:

"And I think you're a major douchebag for ripping on the Qmunity like you did. I'm sure most of the readers would agree."

i thought this was interesting:

"People have been predicting the death of QBasic ever since I joined the community in 1997, and it's still alive and well. As for FB, I think the community will stay small and tight-knit. I dont see FB ever hitting it big and becoming a major compiler, at least not in its current form, but I'm sure it will continue to have a moderate following like it has right now." - new interview

but pete, "what's not to like?" could it be that it's not really basic, that the community has an identity crisis and takes it out on noobs, that it divided the community (i know, you blame the people that didn't convert, you call them the "qb establishment" and i think, "fb haters", but do you understand where the bitterness comes from? could it be that flamewars aren't all fun?)

or you could just ask the people that are using liberty basic, powerbasic, thinbasic, autoit (which isn't even basic, but looks and acts like it,) qbasic "fanatics," etc. if people want to use freebasic, fine! but if we don't like it, there might be a reason other than being old-fashioned, lazy, or stupid as we've been treated. you think it's fun, but then you're really not in it, you just like to watch and pick sides.

perhaps if you spent less time trashing critics to make yourself more popular, and more time learning about freebasic like i did, you'd be able to understand the issue you're telling lots of people about.

you might have decided that i was only arguing points you'd be making two years later, but you're getting there, slowly. of course when you totally agree, you'll be the one that was right all along, and i'll be mennonite.

all i can say to that is happy co- well, happy documentary making. the next time you document something, learn about it first, and we won't have all the really fun and wonderful flamewars you fanned because... because i guess that's what tabloid journalists do.

It was suggested by other persons because they wanted to read this kind of interview of Pete Berg and i dont see any reason why i would not publish it. Things at your feedback was not in my mind when i talked with Pete. They are not my business and i havent even followed much conversation between you two.

But still would be nice to read what Pete has to reply, though i understand if he dont like to dig up old issues anymore.

old issues come up until they are resolved or no one cares

by mennonite (no login)

it's easy for people to say they don't care, that's kind of like saying "don't talk, shut up." lots of people say they don't care, but then they keep talking. i know i'm still talking, but everyone else is still talking.

when someone runs a magazine for a few years and uses it as a tool to single me out, for "ratings," (popularity) for whatever, and it's still working a couple years later? i care about that. pete may pretend not to, but then pete is what he is.

that he's still talks sh*t about me in nov 2007, when he hasn't heard from me in half a year says at least something. all he's got for "loyalty to the qb/fb community" is painting them as a "qb/fb" community where it's supposedly between reasonable people and the "fb haters?" sounds like the enquirer to me. would you start a magazine just about other people's flamewars? wouldn't you kind of hate yourself if you did?

if he says flamewars are "fun" and less "boring" than people getting along, if he says dissenting voices are important, if he is being honest about *anything* he said in the interview, then i'm not a douchebag, or a whackjob. but someone might be.

Run BASIC - a BASIC for the web

by (Premier Login iorr5t)
Forum Owner

I thought that some QBasic coders here would be interested in a new product we're releasing this weekend that will let you leverage your BASIC skills to create web apps without learning a ton of arcane stuff. We were at a software developers conference last year when some people convinced us that a really easy web programming system could be built on BASIC, so we created one called Run BASIC. After a year and a half of development it's finally ready. Run BASIC is built on our popular Liberty BASIC system. Most web programming systems require you to break your program up into a whole bunch of files of different kinds. Run BASIC let's you create web apps using a more classic procedural style.

Have a look at http://www.runbasic.com if you're interested. The site has a limited version that you can play with without downloading anything. Have a look at the Examples and Learn tabs, and especially follow the video link on the home page because it shows in more detail how the actual product works.

We also have a forum online that has been developing in private for a few months so it has a bunch of useful information and some very helpful members. http://runbasic.proboards82.com

Take care, and have a great 2008!
