#38, I can't believe you painted your dog green! Personally, the cats in costume should automatically get extra points. (ever try to dress up your cat?) I really like the parrot and someone should call Guiliani about the ferret!

As a member of PETA you should be the one jailed.

there is nothing wrong with dying animals hair so long as you are very careful and are only using completely safe materials. I regularly dye my poodle with unsweetened KoolAid and she loves the extra attention. People dont typically run up to a poodle to pet it but when they are pink they do. I'd feel I was doing my dog an injustice if I DIDNT dye her because she loves people and loves the attention she gets at the park.

my purple poodle

May 3 2005, 6:46 AM

I can't believe someone would get so outraged about a little color on pet hair. My puppy Rocco is sporting some purple tipped ears via all natural and non-toxic food color. It washes out eventually and now he's got some funky hair color and loves the attention. I think people who do this to their pet's are fun and spontaneus, and more than likely are rockin' similar colors in their own manes. You need to learn to be effective against pet cruelty you need to learn to pick your battles. This is not a battle, the pet's are not in harms way and it concerns only a matter of taste, Not Cruelty!

There are millions of starving animals and people...healthy sweet horses are being butchered by the thousands...and all yoiu bitches can say is "Don''t dye your dog color ....WHINE WHINE>>>>>> You are the people who need a life actually working for somthing that really matters to the animals like food, shelter, and a LIFE!

I have never dyed my dog any color but come on PETA is the
biggest joke out there. Just a bunch of people who need a cause. Support real animal rights groups not the PETA group who picked out side the SPCA agaisnt putting dogs and cats to sleep while the records show PETA kills more animals a year then the SPCA. Get off your righteous bullshit already! Dying a dog may be strange but it is not harmful. Anyone who dyes their dog I am sure pampers it to the extreme.

Dying dogs

June 11 2006, 6:29 PM

Of course you are one of the stupid people with PETA. What is wrong with natural products on dogs hair hell people dye their hair with harsh chemicals. Maybe Peta members should be put in jail. There is nothing wrong with putting safe products on a dog that enjoys being groomed. Yes so cruel taking time to groom your pet. What about the people who got dogs so knotted that the poor dogs are in pain? I am a dog groomer and love creative grooming and will continue to dye my dog. She loves it and all the attention she gets.

We didn't dye our dog green!

December 29 2003, 5:37 PM

Please don't think we would ever do anything harmful to our dogs. Zoe and Maxie are the most spoiled dogs in the world. As for the green, we did not dye or paint our dog green! It was water soluable, non-toxic, FDA approved makeup made for skin and hair. It was on her for less than 15 mins and washed out with plain ole water. We of course gave her a loving bath as well. She was carefully supervised to make sure she didn't lick it, and she didn't even try (even though it wouldn't have hurt her.) She certainly was not upset about the situation whatsoever. Do you think she looked upset or abused? Both dogs are sitting next to me right now very happy, chewing on the new bones they got for Christmas. They both sleep in my bed with me every night and are very spoiled pooches. Please don't heed these bad comments. Both their costumes were homemade with loving care by myself and their grandma. It's a holiday contest, we were being creative, not abusive. And please, vote for Zoe and Maxie #38! Happy Holidays!

Trinity, put a cork in it!

July 5 2004, 5:51 AM

Dyeing a dog using Kool-Aid is just as harmless as giving it a bath, in fact, may be safer. I'm thinking of a nice shade of red or maybe auburn brown tones for my cockapoo. He ate a plate of lasagna the other night and it left his face a very charming shade of sienna. It looked more his personality than the drift snow color he is now. He looks like a girl dog white. I think maybe you've been dipped in a nice shade of green yourself. Trinity, I would think you could find something more constructive to do than tattle on what a person such as yourself would call a waste of time. These aren't people who get off on pulling pranks on their pets. These are people who love their pets and would never do anything to harm them. Kool-aid....Now That's creative......Right On!!!! I think it's a creative and fun, perhaps unusual way to spend time with your pet, I also think the pet loves it, but in no way, shape or form is this animal cruelty. I believe without a doubt that these people who dye their pets would stop in a heart beat if they thought for a second that their pet was in harms way. Although it is an unusual concept,I think it is a brilliant show of love, literally!!!! Sounds like fun for all.

This is as safe as you can get:

It takes about 15 small packages of Kool-Aid to do a small dog, Steck says. Be sure to buy the no-sugar-added kind. You don't want your dog to attract bees or flies.

"Also, get a flavor you like, because it really smells," both during and after, she added.

"I've found that red (cherry), blue (blueberry), purple (grape), green (lemon-lime) and orange work well," she said. "Yellow (lemon) doesn't take well at all. And don't be fooled by fruit punch. It looks blue on the package, but it's really pink."

Remember that you can mix colors. "For a brighter purple, for example, add some blue and pink."

The dyeing process is fairly simple:

"Start with a clean, dry dog. Mix about three packages of Kool-Aid to each gallon of warm water; pour, spray or smudge the mixture on your pooch" and let it dry. That's all there is to it, Steck said.

"The key to the Kool-Aid is to use heat. Put it on warm, by using warm water." If you like, make it pasty by adding conditioner for easier handling and thorough covering of hair. You could even blow-dry the newly colored locks, as long as your dog doesn't mind blow-dryers, she said.

"The color will last about a week, then fade, or you can wash it out."

The type of dye you use may depend on the color you want and on your dog's hair, Steck said. Generally, Kool-Aid doesn't produce intense colors, and short-haired dogs don't dye as well as long-haired ones.

Temporary dyes are available in spray form and sell for about $2 or $3 a can. One can will cover a small dog; larger dogs need two or three.

Just remember that commercial colorings are meant for people, not dogs. Most contain chemicals, so if the dye is used at all, it should be used sparingly and cautiously and washed out as soon as possible.

Another complicating consideration: Many dogs don't like aerosol sprays.

When applying dyes, be sure to protect your dog's eyes and ears. And if your dog is allergy-prone, do a test swatch first.

As for why one would bother to dye a dog in the first place, Steck responds: "Because it's fun." But, no matter how much fun it may be for you, if it's not fun for your dog as well, it's better to let the idea of dog dyeing die.

i think your green dog is way cool - where did you get it, it is a regular dog that has been left on the counter too long..

also many people don't realize that with pieces of coral painted brown and some ordinary wood screws that even a child can be made to look like a little deer

I personally would not want to dye my dog green and think it is slightly cruel But if you use dog shampoo dye then it doesnt harm them. I once wanted to dye my dashund white cos i wanted to be original after alot of reasearch I found it was really dangerous if you dont get it done I would originally thought to have get it done profesionally but infact loads of people do it badly. Look into it before you do it and make sure they dont mind. Just because you want it doesnt mean your dogs do to.I hope you take my suggestions into consideration.

Again, I say to you all who are outraged by the greening of this dog: They stated right on the posting that Zoe wasn't harmed with the green dye. People dye their hair different crazy colors all the time. And neither dog looks like they've been beaten. They only look like dogs who aren't having a good time because their stupid owners tied crap to their heads, and are trying to take goofy pictures of them. Kids do the same thing, if you haven't noticed. It doesn't mean that the kids have been beaten, either. Vote for Zoe and her Max-friend. They're good sports. It's the least you can do for her after she had to sit through her dye job. It's a great pic.

They say "Zoe was not harmed in any way by the greening. Harmless color stuff. Washed right off."

I hope she's OK.

But what is that stuff made of? Just beacuse it washes right off doesn't mean it's magically OK to slather your pet with it.

Green Dog?Blue Dog?Purple Dog? Whatever.... :)

April 3 2004, 7:09 PM

If I may, I would like to pass on a little information that may help put this dispute to rest. There is a product, I am unsure if it is the one in question, called Pet Silk. It is a groomer/vet formulated dye, used in the grooming industry, originally designed for whiting whites and blacking dark coats. It is FDA approved and is no more dangerous than the cream rinse used on long haired dogs. They have a website, see for yourself,(http://mjmcompany.com/petsilk-colors.htm). By the way, a cheap way to dye your own dog at home.... Kool-Aid, yup, plain old SUGAR-FREE Kool-Aid packets, completly safe and edible. Be warned this is extremely messy, so be prepared to be dyed as well ;)
Happy Dyeing!
