Pinnoy Bill Gregory Opinion Piece in the YCM

-
In recognition of the late Bill Gregory the Club will be starting a column in YCMs from now on called The Pinnoy Bill Gregory Opinion Piece - if you can think of a more appropriate title shout now!

The column will be written by a member of the public and will be about anything cricket - forthright views sought, but nothing over the line - same rules as the various forums really. Ideally, well informed pieces which create discussion and interest.

Pieces should be between 300 and 600 words and submitted to jbuttler@yorkshireccc.com

We've always talked about encouraging you to submit pieces from beyond the boundary fence and although Bill's passing is sad news for all concerned it does seem to be a fitting tribute, encouraging all of you to submit pieces involving passion, knowledge, humour and spirit in the same way that Bill invariably did himself on the WRF.

I will be responsible for choosing the piece for each YCM from the submissions received and reserve the right to edit them slightly if required. I know many of you are very good at putting pen to paper but if you are not as confident please do not be put off - you all have opinions.

The deadline for the September edition of the YCM is 7th August so get writing. Any pieces not used in the YCM may be utilised as features on the official website. I will also be seeking input from The Corridor and from outside of the forums too.

Any questions please ask

All the best

James

Well.

It's a nice idea but I doubt whether Bill's name will mean much to the general membership of the Club beyond the narrow confines of this Forum. I also doubt whether you'll attract enough submissions with the quality, wit and passion that Bill could produce. You might end up with a torrent of invective and dull prejudice that will be a poor memorial for Bill and a depressing article for your magazine. You may also find yourself inviting passionate criticism of the club's performance - on and off the pitch - which you will find impossible to print - even after your no-doubt careful editing...
Sometimes it's wise to wait for the emotions to settle a little before deciding upon an appropriate memorial.

Well, some of the comments are already in keeping with Bill's approach to life. Never take anything at face value and be prepared to defend your opinions.

It should be noted that PinoyBill's family fully endorse this initiative and are very pleased that a testimonial column is going to be included in the YCM.

I hope Yorkshire cricket fans will help out with this tribute by submitting pieces which reflect Bill's passion for, and knowledge of Yorkshire cricket. Bill left such a wonderful legacy here at the WRF, and I feel that this YCM feature will go some way towards making sure that PinoyBill's memory is celebrated long into the future.

And if Bill is watching from the "Lords" ground in the heavens, I'm sure he would be pleased in his own way.

actually Bill posted far and wide - a small group I am a member of have had the pleasure of his contributions for some time.

He last posted with 'us' on Saturday 28th June - his topic was Collingwood and rounoutgate and his posting was a reproduction of the one origanlly from this forum - a duplication for which he apologised - he need not have. His contributions were a pleasure to behold and only twice as good for being seen twice - deeply saddened.
