A big day for the Yorkshire players. Are they going to stumble to an expected loss (probably an innings defeat) or will they show some Yorkshire grit and get off the mat? A real test of character today - and a chance to show their long-suffering fans that they are not going to crash out of the first division and allow themselves to be demoted.
It is time for the senior players to STAND UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!
All is not lost. Remember Yorkshire went from 341-2 to lose a match a few weeks ago. So even at 232-3, Notts can still be beaten, but without Rana and McGrath we are uo against the odds. Come on Tykes.
What's happened to Rana? Is it the shoulder he injured last year - how did it happen?
I can't believe we've got Lyth bowling - now I begin to understand why! Doesn't jacques ever bowl these days?
Very grim. It looks like a heavy defeat is almost a certainty now. A completely dispirited team at the moment, I'm afraid.
Demotion would be a catastrophe. It would have a negative effect on both next year's memberships and attendance. Second division in the Championship, and second division in the Pro40, in its last year of existence. A prescription for failure, I'd say.
And what of Gough's legacy? He was supposed to rejuvenate the team. Instead we've tottered from one fiasco to another, and he appears to have lost interest altogether.
If Naved is totally crocked, ask Darren Lehmann if he would come back to lead the team for rest of the season. There are three good home games to come at Scarborough.
We should open with White (if fit) and Taylor and have a middle order of Gale, McGrath, Lehmann and Rudolf, followed by Brophy, Rashid and Bresnan and give Wainwright more games (or Patterson if pitch seamer friendly) and finally Hoggard. Lyth should be the first substitute batsman, unless a better one emerges very soon!
The main requirement is for someone to "get a grip", before team totally falls apart - both Gough and Moxon have been great disappointments this season. Moxon for poor team selection/tactics/visibility and Gough for a real lack of commitment on the pitch.
On the positive side, in their last home match against Surrey, Notts. saved the game, following on, by scoring 372 for 6.
Are Yorkshire going to do the same? Probably not in the current state of demoralization - unless Chris Taylor turns into the combination of Hutton and Bradman some people apparently believe him to be. Actually, I'm almost sorry for Taylor: even if he doubles his career average (currently around 26), he won't be able to satisfy the expectations.
Any predictions for the Yorkshire opening partnership? I hear the spread betting favours 0 - 2, with 3 - 6 as second favourite.
P.S. The Taylor situation is the one element of humour in the present fiasco. When he wasn't playing, almost everyone was arguing he should open with Lyth in the CC. Now he has played and got a duck in the first innings, it's being suggested (by Alibor) that he should play instead of Lyth!! How many more failures will it take before he's being touted for an England début?
I have to confess to not actually having seen Taylor bat, but I have seen Lyth and do not think that he has the makings of an opening batsman - but I could be wrong! We surely could do better with opening partnerships and Taylor should be given his chance - some very famous players started with ducks. I thought we acquired Taylor because someone thought he had potential but IMHO, he has not been well treated. I do NOT think McGrath should open - he is dodgy starter and is best not to be starting against the new ball!
is 27 years old and has a career average in the region of 26 (much of it from 2nd division cricket). He didn't make it in his first spell with Yorkshire, though he had a few promising moments. Quite why he should now be so widely regarded as a potential saviour is puzzling. I do wish him all the best, but I can't always achieve the level of happy amnesia that sometimes prevails on this forum.
Lyth is 20 years old and, in my opinion, could turn into an excellent opening bat, though I agree it would be better not to be relying on 20-year-olds in the current crisis. I agree that it might be sensible to rethink the strategy with Craig White, though age is obviously catching up with him.
I did query the signing of Taylor originally as at the time of his signing, I personally did not think he was any better than our existing players. But which is worse, sign someone and play him and find out he is no better than existing players, or sign him and not play him. I think the former is the better option of the two. If we do not play him how can we possibly find out how good or bad he is. He was poor first time around for us but he may have improved. We shall find out if we play him and lets face it with the injuries we have at the moment( Mags could be out for a while now as well) we have no other option.
I didn't ever think Taylor was poor. I just don't see how he can bear the current burden of expectation.
Also, I don't accept the view that he's been treated badly. We are giving him a second chance, after all, and there was no clear cricketing reason to think he should come out of Derbyshire's Second XI and into Yorkshire's First.
