Is it time for the Tykes to cut Rana Naved?

The Tykes face another major problem now that Rana has decided to sign on again for Lahore Badshahs in the unsanctioned ICL, not officially recognized by the ICC.

Given Rana‘s poor performance, poor attitude and the fact that he has been nothing but a headache since he signed with us, I for one would like manangement to own up to their mistake and drop him.

We need a committed, healthy overseas player who plays by the rules.

I couldn't agree more. Rana represents all that is bad about today's mercenary overseas cricketers. He has no loyalty whatsoever to his sundry employers, is seldom in the best playing condition, and is in it for himself, and himself alone.

He made no meaningful contribution last season and is VERY injury prone. In many ways the overseas position is the most important on the team. Lets get someone who will get the job done, won't be injured for half the matches, and shows some pride in playing for the White Rose.

Agreed but

he has another year on his contract so we either reach a compromise agreement, pay him off for the next year, hope he gets injured and cannot meet terms of his contract or we accept he plays for us (and we may or may not select him)

We could sign 2 or more overseas players but would only be able to play one - several counties appear to have done this last season

Maybe we could loan him out somewhere next season and then not lose out financially?

I am sure the committee are just as interested in trying to untangle this mess as we all are - lets hope they have some decent legal advisers to make sure we don't mess up

I find this anti Rana Naved talk rather strange. And some of it seems rather a slur on the mans attitude. You cannot blame any man for maximising his earnings.Agreed you have to honour any previous contracts.

Yes last year there were problems and one doubts the wisdom of signing him in the first place.

But remember he was a significant factor in the success of Sussex.

A fit Rana playing well would be an asset. Perhaps we can get rid of him but he has a two year contract.

You never know if he has got over his problems we may yet see the best of him next season if he stays. If we can`t get rid of him lets hope he proves all the doubters wrong.

A magnificent success in the Bradford League hence his going to Sussex.

Oh ye of little faith. Or patience. The shoulder will hopefully have improved over time.

Too much baggage?

Yes, but by the time his shoulder is fully healed (if ever), he will be banned by the ECB for playing in an illegal league. That will present further problems for Yorkshire and may run into the next season and compromise our chances of getting a replacement.

Its time to move on...without Naved.

as has been pointed out he is under contract. he is a quality crcketer who helped sussex to a championship and i saw him destroy yorkshire in a single session at hove. we should concentrate on keeping him fit and focussed. i can remember a tirade of ill informed ignorant comments over imran tahir. he is a quality player as well

Firstly, why did we ever sign him on a two year contract? I would have thought all overseas players would be signed on a years contract at most. With his injury record he was hardly in a position to insist on anything longer and if he did then we should have said ''thanks, but no thanks.''

Secondly, a contract is a contract and I doubt the ECB/ICC (for that read BCCI) could ban players from domestic games for playing cricket in unsanctioned events. They tried and failed with Packer players and I doubt the law has changed much since. International cricket is different and Indian law may well be different to ours, but I believe it will be tested very shortly.

Playing Rana may well get us a ban from the big money event of ''Champions League Cricket'' should we manage to qualify, (as it did Kent this year) but we may just have to swallow that for another year.

What would we do in 2010 if we won the championship on the back of a fully fit and focused Rana taking 100 wickets? I know what most on here would say but I'd guess the moneymen would say something different if there was no chance of winning a million.

Our best hope, and at the moment it seems unlikely, is for the BCCI and the ICL to sort out their differences and remove the threat of bans. Worst case scenario is that we have to keep Rana, he bowls like a drain all summer but we somehow get to the final of the twenty/20 and promptly get banned from the big money event in India.

"They are upset that the Pakistani pace bowler has signed for another season in the unauthorized Indian Cricket League contrary to their wishes."

I've heard from a good source that Yorkshire is trying to unload Rana Naved. Good riddance, I'd say.

timing

in this world of financial turmoil its perhaps apt for some of the usual warning lines on investment matters to be applied to the selection criteria for a cricket team

1. Past performance is no guarantee for the future returns
2. Bowling average returns can go up as well as down

Those pro-Rana supporters seem to be stretching back a few years now for his glory days - if he was any good now then why would he be playing in the mickey mouse indian T20 league and why is he not a regular in the Pakistan starting team? His best days are behind him and we are looking forward to next season and trying to pick a squad who will be stronger than this years team.

Past performances are an indication of talent/form but lets face it, Rana (and Vaughan for that matter) don't have sufficient form over the last 12 months to justify selection in the starting line up. As someone has said before, if we just look at past performance stats then we could solve our openers problem and recall Boycott and Hutton.

If your overseas player is meant to be someone who is your first 'pick' then Rana is not the right man.

At some stage you have to make a decision on when a players best days are behind him (England appear to have done this with Hoggy and he may prove them wrong, Yorkshire were a year out with their assessment of Gough but I suppose he would not have returned on a one year deal).

With Rana I don't see him getting any better and back to his 'best' now. Therefore if we can find a way of untangling his contract - either by him breaching it, him being injured or a compromise to the satisfaction of both parties then I would welcome his departure. This is not illegal or to suggest the club breaks his contract illegally but if wants to earn more money playing elsewhere and this conflicts with his contract with us then the 2 parties could reach a compromise presumably.

I am sure if the club were keen to keep his contract and focus on him being our overseas player next season then they would have come out and supported or defended him. Are the other counties with players who are playing in India and putting at risk their T20 big pay day also looking at their players carefully as well?
