The other first divi teams continue to strengthen their sides...what are Yorkshire going to do? Standing pat is not an option in a VERY competitive first division.

We already have an overseas player - WE CAN NOT sign another.

can't we?

i thought several teams signed more than one overseas player last season and picked only one of them - the rules only allow you to play one overseas player but I think you can sign more than one (if you can afford it and if both of them are happy on the understanding that only one of them gets a game)

So we can sign another overseas player and leave Rana in the seconds - he might not like it but Surrey signed Shoaib Akhtar at the end of last season despiter having Matt Nicholson still on their books I believe

Rules

Not sure of the rules, but I believe Surrey released Mat Nicholson before signing Shoiab. Can we really afford the salaries and costs of having 2 overseas players. I think realistically we will not be signing anyone else from overseas until we can somehow (by fair means or foul) get rid of Naved.

I think you can have ten if you want, (maybe even 20) but only one on the books at a time. If we want someone else than Rana would have to go, one way or another. I've said it before but most counties sign overseas players for one season at a time nowadays, hense Durham signing Chanderpaul, so why did we sign Rana for two years when it was obvious to all it was a risky signing for even one year?

Standing pat?

November 14 2008, 9:26 AM

There was quite a lot of discussion about Yorkshire's best team before the start of the 2008 season. Several contributors made a reasoned case for the omission of Bresnan, Gale or both from the starting eleven. In the event, both made enormous contributions, no doubt partly because some confidence was shown in them. And partly, of course, because, as Heraclitus of Ephesus spotted in the fifth century BC, nothing ever stands still.
Whether we need to sign an overseas player probably depends on the following question: are we suffering from a lack of talent or a lack of confidence among the existing players?

Heraclitus?
Wasn'nt he that spinner with the dodgy action who played for Kent a few years ago?

On the basis that Socrates was a footballer...

BOTH! A solid, professional overseas player could help us to address both issues at once. If we trey to deal with one and not the other, we will struggle again.

Chanderpaul etc

I think you will find that a county can only have 1 registerd o/seas player at a time.

Durham have signed Chanderpaul for 2009 but he will probably not be available for some of the season. ( IPL commitment?) I understand, although he may be contracted to play, until he is registered, they can register another o/seas player to fill the gaps. Last season they had 3( McKenzie,A.Morkel, and Chanderpaul)but they did not overlap.McKenzie featured up to the T20,then Morkel for the T20 and a couple of other games, then C'paul for July/August. They contemplated a 4th,Amla, for the final championship games.
