Clue 1: "I AM A YORKSHIREMAN WHO HAS APPEARED IN 135 INTERNATIONALS, BUT I'VE NEVER SCORED A RUN IN EITHER TEST MATCHES OR ONE-DAY INTERNATIONALS - WHO AM I?"
You are quite right (on two counts Steve C) - you got the question wrong and all the answers for daily prize questions will be revealed after the competition has closed as they all count towards the overall prize too.
For those of you that have struggled on some questions do no be deterred. I've shown a few of the Secret Santas to players who have not even recognised their own team-mates - some are easier than others.
I would be incredibly surprised if the winner gets anything like 25/25 so keep going and good luck! I've always hated the This Morning type competitions where the questions would be 'where do YCCC play - Wimbledon, Adelaide or Headingley Carnegie Cricket Ground.' Hopefully this comp is a little more challenging.
think I could have a good stab at the 2 youngsters - assuming its the younger person in each picture we are trying to identify.
I agree with James that this sort of quiz is far more fun than the banal obvious multiple choice quiz where its all about maximising entries to maximise phone revenues
I just noticed the daily prize thing on the mystery santa, I reckon I got that and didn't send it in. Anyway I've got my eyes on the first prize 5 out of 5 so far.
No-one likes a smart arse...
I think I've got two.
And i'm not sure about one of them because I'm sure James is going to reveal that we signed Victor Trumper in 1902....
I thought this one was rather easy ..... it's Father Christmas .... what, you mean that there's someone who's not FC in the costume .... whatever will they think of next (lol)
got todays answer but have struggled with some of the photos
not sure I would recognise photos of myself from that long ago never mind baby faced promising cricketers who have since grown beards, gone bald, dyed their hair or disappeared down a plughole of obscurity after yet another Yorkshire promising career ended up on the scrapheap and they now turn out for some clubside in the Midlands or similar
Starting to look at our playing squad and crossing off all those who are out of the country so not around to be filmed - still not helping narrow them down!
I'm going to be spending most of Christmas scouring the deeper recesses of Wikipedia.
The quiz is excellent - but it is COMPLETELY beyond me!
In fact - it's making me question just how poor a fan I must be - I used to imagine I knew a lot about YCCC and now it transpires I know nothing!
So come on Loiner and the mighty Dewsburian - how many have you got so far...?
All 17 "In my mind anyway" but I'm the type of guy who thinks he got 100% in all exams and tests before I see the results, I'm always ultra confident and then it turns out I get a couple of stupid ones wrong.
Nine Yorkshire players who have been Test match captains...?
Very clever question. Not necessarilly captains of England then...
It's a shame we're not doing it on the Forum because that would be a really interesting one to discuss. What was the official start of Test Matches? Do Lord Hawke's touring England teams count or were they not "official" tests....?
Would that mean they were Yorkshire players at the time they got their hat-tricks in Test cricket? In which case there are three. If it means Yorkshiremen or Yorkshire players who got Test hat-tricks then there are four.
I've just spotted your message, Steve. Sorry, I was extremely busy when the quiz started and decided I had to pass on it. As an old French philosopher friend of mine used to say, the trouble with the contemporary world is that there's just too much of everything in it. And I can't get those "mystery guest"-type questions either!
Craig White was born in Yorkshire at Morley- and went to Australia with is parents at the age of 7, being brought up in Victoria - so it wasn't him.
I think Craig McDermott was the actual first signing but then withdrew before the start of the season because of injury. Then came Sachin. Of course I am probably wrong.
I have read previously that Craig White was signed as an overseas player when he first signed for Yorkshire - not that I put that in my answer slaps head
My understanding is that as Craig White had first played for Victoria, he had to be signed as an overseas player when he joined Yorkshire. I could be wrong though.
I would guess its Craig McDermott who was the first officially signed overseas player as White cannot have been played as an overseas player before then
Craig McDermott was the first officially signed overseas player. White not only qualified for England he also qualified for Yorkshire. McDermott never got as far as playing of course. If only the same could be said of one or two other overseas players we have signed!
its now 8th Jan - 2 days after closing date - can we not have the answers on the official site yet?
There is a good quiz in this months Wisden cricketer magazine as well with several questions having a Yorkshire related slant if I have got the answers correct.
if someone could confirm how many Sheffield Shield games Craig White has played I may be able to be certain I have one correct about brother in laws playing in a Brisbane test match!
I got 23 (I thought Stewart Regan was John Blain) and got the O/Seas one wrong though I dispute it, Craig White had played for Victoria before he signed for Yorkshire so I thought he had to be registered as OS to begin with?
I got 21. I got wrong 2 Secret Santas, the identity of the two youngsters, and the Craig McDermott question. I also would like to dispute the latter, as I still think it is Craig White. As he had played for Victoria as a local, he had to sign for Yorkshire initially as an overseas player.
After your reactions I phoned Chalky today to confirm that he never played for Yorkshire as an overseas player - he played because he was born in the county and signed as a domestic player.
James (and Mr White) - thank you for the clarification. I got my information about White being the first overseas player from Wikipedia - which shows that you can't always believe what you read.
Thanks for a very enjoyable quiz. The fact that only one person got 25, and that the 'experts' on the WRF all got a few wrong shows how tricky many of the questions (and Secret Santas) were.
