Hutton, Trueman, Boycott and Rhodes are all included. Curiously, Herbert Sutciffe with the highest Test average of any Englishman (60.73) is not.

George and Hedley

January 3 2009, 7:22 PM

Along with Sutcliffe, George Hirst and Hedley Verity must have been on the shortest of short lists. In any case a cricket Hall of Fame has been a long time coming. Indeed, why not a YCCC HOF at Headingley-Carnegie with a dedicated room, memorabilia, etc?

The club could start with an all-time Yorkshire XI, and then add a plyer or two a season, and could a fan vote along with a press, WRF and committee input.

I like the idea of a Yorkshire hall of fame. Mainly but not exclusive to Yorkshiremen. We could also honour those who produced monumental performances within the broad acres.
As well as the obvious Yorkshire candidates how about the heroics of Botham and Willis in '81, Bradman's 300+ and Gooch's 154no?

I rate that innings of Gooch against the might of the West Indies attack including Walsh and Ambrose as probably the best innings I've ever witnessed in a test match. The Lara innings against Australia a few years later (and I'm sure he ended up 154no too) pushes it close.

I too cannot understand why Sutcliffe is not there. Averaging 60 in Test cricket certainly should get him in but there you go. I cannot fathom (if you are picking on Test form) why Barry Richards is there as he actually only played 4 times for SA though only a fool would say that he is not one of the finest batsman ever to pick up the willow.

George Hirst, though you could make a good case for him being the best ever county player of all time (look at his record, it is mindblowing) has a very average Test record and due to this his ommission from a list of this nature is most understandable.

Well said Cross Bat Hitter - you make a compelling case. Hirst and Sutcliffe will probably make in the future as they are going to be adding 'new' players each year. I would think both would go in on the next round.

BTY: Welcome to the WRF. You obviously know your cricket, and I for one look forward to future posts.

A Yorkshire HOF is a great idea for Yorkshire. What other team has the history we do? And a fan vote to pick the initial XI inductees would be a winner for sure.

A Yorkshire Hall of Fame is a brilliant idea. I hope the club will act on it, and involve the fans in the decision as to gets nominated.

I'd be interested in James Buttler's or Stewart Regan's thoughts on the subject.

If Gooch gets into this thing ahead of Sutcliffe, then presumably Peter Such will be in long before Verity.

Agreed, but I guess they wanted to 'spread the wealth.' Both Verity and Sutcliffe should have gone right in.
