| Today's FLASHBACK (Bobby Peel) had an outstanding career and is one of numerous world-class Yorkshire spinners of the left-arm persuasion.
Taking 1,775 wickets at 16.20 is one thing, but his economy rate of 1.98 per over is especially outstanding
Compare to other well-known Yorkshire left-arm spin bowlers.
1.84 Edmund Peate (209 matches)
1.88 Hedley Verity (378 matches)
2.12 Johnny Wardle (412 matches)
2.27 Wilfred Rhodes (1,110 matches)
2.47 Phil Carrick (444 matches)

David Wainwright 14 matches with economy rate of 3.21 for his 30 first class wickets.
I think it just goes to show how the game has generally advanced with heavier bats, smaller boundaries, covered pitches and the like often used as excuses for why todays bowlers are more expensive.
Mind you, Peel must rank in our top team of 'characters'! |

I must admit I'm surprised Fregie is so low .... Carrick could bowl tightly .... but I clearly remember Hadlee using 2 or 3 balls when batting at Park Avenue ... balls kept getting hit into the grass covered football ground (thankfully the stand had already been demolished) ... & as one was returned another was despatched |

Not wishing to take anything away from someone who was a superb bowler, but for most of his career he was bowling four ball overs,so it made his runs per over more economical. |

4 ball overs were used from 1880-1888. | |
