Despite the attractive picture on the cover of the U.S. edition, Netherland isn't really a cricket book; rather, it's the excuse, or perhaps the backdrop, for a rather engrossing tale of a marriage, an immigration, a career, a mysterious but often amusing relationship, and a city under stress. But O'Neill clearly understands both cricket and what it may or may not represent.
Over the past few months, I've read quite a number of reviews of Netherland in publications both modest and fancy. None of them is as good or as insightful as Steve's WRF review last July 15, and if you haven't seen that, or have forgotten it, I'd urge you to follow Alex's link and read it.
