Am I the only one who does not like this name for OD cricket? I preferred Phoenix, and would like to go back to being called the Yorkshire Phoenix, or maybe something different.
Couldn't agree more. Alas, money ALWAYS talks the loudest these days. "Headingley Carnegie" will always be Headingley to me and the same goes for the Phoenix. Tradition should count for something, especially in Yorkshire cricket. At least the "White Rose" Forum has it right!
As I said on another thread a few days ago, Manchester United are still nicknamed ''the red devil's'' even York City who now play at ''Kit Kat Crescent'' remain the ''Minstermen.'' Why did the ''Pheonix'' have to become ''Carnegie''? What sort of nickname is that? Cricket doesn't have a history of nicknames like football and it never will if names that mean something only to sponsors are used. If aunt Bessie takes over the sponsorship we could become ''the puddings.''
Sorry but cant get excited over what our 1 day team is called ... its only Sky who use it anyway ... the Western Terrace still chant 'Yerksha' rather than whatever we're currently called. Everyone I know goes to watch Yorkshire in a 1 da game rather than Phoenix/Carnigie/Puddings
I've always liked the "Tykes" as the best nickname. "Carnegie" doesn't work at all, although I appreciate that high quality sponsors deserve some recognition. "Phoenix" is simply too contrived to ever be taking seriously. Besides how can a team have different nicknames, depending on the type of competition?
But aren't we all missing the point here?
You can't have an "official" nickname. Whatever the club decides to style itself for commercial reasons, the supporters will always use "Tykes" as a nickname anyway..
I can help with Shay's question as the question was asked at an AGM I did attend. The club originally suggested that we should be called Yorkshire Fire. Thankfully for all the club consulted local councils. Bradford rather naturally objected
due to the deaths at Vally Parade which were then still in many people's thoughts. The backroom staff were then asked if they could come up with a name. One young lady (who I last saw working for Notts at Trent Bridge) came up with Phoenix. Before you ask no I don't know why Tykes was rejected.
Our name is Yorkshire CCC. I have never referred to them as Tykes, Phoenix, Carnegie or anything else. All the fixture cards etc only mention Yorkshire and no one in normal conversation states "I am going to Headingley to watch Yorkshire Carnegie today".
I have also never heard anyone say Carnegie or Phoenix for that matter. If we have to have a nickname - and why should we - I think Tykes is the least worst.
Stu's comment was actually less harsh then it could have been .... i.e. you never hear anyone saying "I'm going to Headingley Carnigie to watch Yorkshire Carnigie" as the ground is also sponsored
btw Am I the only one who normally only knows who we're playing before the game when we are away? The main thought is about when & where to go. If the destination is Trent Bridge its a good bet we're playing Notts ... but if Yorks are playing at Headingley or Scarborough I'm more bothered about the start time than the opposition
No matter how terrible and sponsor-ridden the nickname ''carnegie'' is, I'm not sure not having a nickname is an option. Didn't Kent originally say they would not have one only for the ECB to say that they had to? Still, even ''Spitfires'' is better than ours.
