Double standards

Is it me or is a strange double standard operating on this forum where Joe Sayers and Michael Vaughan are concerned? There seems to be a consensus that, on the strength of a couple of practice matches, Sayers should open the batting for Yorkshire in the county championship. By contrast, there's general agreement that Vaughan, who also hit a century in the ProArch Trophy, has to score runs for Yorkshire in the championship before he can resume his England place.
Might it be worth recalling that in Sayers' last ten championship innings for Yorkshire, his scores have been as follows:
6, 4, 9, 8, 8, 22, 14, 0, 9 and 2
Michael Vaughan's last ten innings for England:
4, 106, 30, 48, 16, 2, 0, 21, 0 and 17 (and where both ducks were concerned, Snicko showed he shouldn't have been given out).

Mm.

Interesting numbers, but I'm not sure what point you're making? Are you suggesting that we should open with Vaughan and another (Gale?)? It does seem slightly strange that we're all assuming that Joe will open the season as our first choice opener again when he had such a disastrous run last year.
However, Sayers can only be an opener - it would be illogical to bat him anywhere else. If we're going to pay his wages for another season I guess we need to establish whether he's going to succeed in his designated role..

It just seems odd that, despite his abysmal performances of last season, Sayers is regarded as a shoe-in, whereas everyone seems to think Vaughan has to prove himself. I see it the other way round. In my view, Sayers has more to do than just show form in practice matches. He has to get some runs for the Second XI and force his way back into the team. Vaughan, on the other hand, is clearly a class act who, as Steve James pointed out last year, is likely to play at least one match-winning innings in a test series - and to do so whether he's getting runs for Yorkshire or not.
I'm happy that Sayers did well in the Middle East. I'll be happier still if he can do it in the North, Midlands and South. I wish him well, but only on the same basis as all our other batsmen, such as Lyth and Gale.

Well said.

I agree with all you say.
I'm similarly surprised that Brophy seems to be regarded as an automatic selection. He's a decent enough keeper but has never scored the volume of runs we should expect of him. I can't remember him ever influencing the outcome of any game through a substantial innings that changed the course of the match.
I'd like to see Moxon put him under a bit of pressure - not from the clearly indisposed Simon Guy - but from some of the younger keepers. I think Brophy would benefit from a bit of a sharp reminder and some clearly defined performance targets. He seems to cruise through seasons at the moment; if he's English qualified there's a clear recognisable target for him to aim for...
