Not exactly a positive review, but it's important to consider all perspectives:

"....will need a Hoggard county swansong plus a dry summer for spinners Adil Rashid, Azeem Rafiq and David Wainwright to mask pace bowling deficiencies."

"Will be battling to avoid relegation."

But they like David Bairstow.

"Big year for Jonathan Bairstow Will attract interest if he breaks into the side in his first year on staff as a batsman."

It is Bob Willis!

April 14 2009, 7:23 AM

This should carry the warning that it is Bob Willis' opinion. On that basis, we are almost certain to win the Championship! Is it just me, or does everyone turn over the TV when boring Bob is on?

Personally

I would have been much more concerned if he was optimistic about our chances..

'Seam bowling deficiencies'

April 14 2009, 10:43 AM

Not sure what they're going on about there. If anything I'd say our seam bowling is a real strength this season.

This is the man that tipped us for Championship success last season because we signed Rana Naved as our overseas player.

What you talking about Willis

April 14 2009, 11:13 AM

I am not sure Bob Willis would recognise half the team if he bumped into them so how he can pass judgement on them is beyond me.

The Guardian is hardly the hotbed of cricket journalism and if you want proper views on the county circuit then read the articles in Wisden Cricket Monthly where they are closer to this level of cricket unlike Bob who has test matches only on his agenda (and did so when he played as well).

he probably thinks our seam attack is weakened by the loss of Darren Gough still

On the occasions when Willis deigned to play for Warwickshire, one of the Edgbaston members would shout out "Bowler's name!" each time he came on.

Agree

Agree with all the observations about Bob Willis and his general lack of county cricket knowledge although disagree with the comments about the Guardian not being a hotbed of cricket journalism. I think David Hopps and Mike Selevy (+ Vic Marks if we include the Guardians Sunday sister) are just about the best regular current cricket writers around.
