As a new user of this site,I wondered if the idea of a regular Quiz Thread on Yorkshire Cricket has ever been a feature, and would posters be intersted in introducing such a thread?

Re: Question Time?

We did run a regular Yorkshire trivia-type feature several years back. I think it was moderated by "California Scarborian"(?). The hardest part was coming up with questions that could stump what is a very cricket literate group here on the WRF.
So how many ducks did Geoffrey Boycott have in Test cricket?

I'm afraid Google rendered any quiz fairly meaningless...
Be warned! We know it all on here and what we don't know we make up so convincingly that it at least sounds like we know it all. Bring it on, one of us will know the answer, or pretend we do;-)
Like your approach Cleasby so while you are thinking about your first tricky question to try and stump us all, here is one of my favourites to let you see how quickly the correct answer appears from one of the other posters
Geoff Boycott scored his 100th hundred in 1977. Another player also scored his 100th hundred in the same year. The easy part is to name the other player but the follow up is to identify what else linked the two events directly.
Aye, I dived in a bit sharpish there and without thinking. Zaheer's hundredth hundred was a couple of years later I think. Roope must have been batting with John Edrich when he made the landmark? Easier runs down south though!

Sorry folks but Roope wasn't batting when Edrich made his 100th ton. Wisden originally stated that he was ... but sometime in the last 5 years corrected the fault in an erata for the 1978 edition
According to Wikipedia it was Geoff Howarth of New Zealand who was actually at the other end when Edrich got hust 100th 100.
Wikipedia is only as good as the info typed in. What we really need is Edrich or Howarth to join this debate.

typical
April 16 2009, 7:55 AM
what used to be a nice quiz question gets ruined by Wisden issuing an errata many years after the event.
Well we cannot ask Roope as he died last year i think so lets hope Edrich or Howarth can put us right then?
Anyway Cleasby - you may now see why we have shied away from quiz questions as it only leads to argument, disagreement and 2 different answers to a simple question (both of which are correct depending on when you last read Wisden!)
The late, much lamented Bill Frindall, aka the Bearded Wonder, dealt with this on October 5, 2004, on the BBC web site:
"Thanks to Jerry Lodge, Surrey CCC's Librarian, I can confirm that Graham Roope was NOT the batting partner when John Edrich reached his 100th century (v Derbyshire in 1977) - see AB 82and 83. Jerry writes: To the eternal shame of the Oval authorities, all of Jack Hill's scorebooks have been destroyed.
I have spoken to David Baggett who holds all the Derbyshire scorebooks and he confirms that Geoff Howarth was batting when John Edrich completed his century.
This is also in line with the mounted scorecard that hangs in the corridor outside the Library at The Oval."
That's final enough for me, not least since Graham Roope can't help us out, having died unexpectedly just over a couple of years ago. And neither Edrich nor Howarth seems to have suggested to the BBC or anyone else that the Derbyshire scorebook is wrong.
By the way, Bill Frindall's reference to Surrey's librarian reminds me: does Yorkshire have such an august person?

further confusion
April 16 2009, 9:30 AM
Cricket Archive has the following post srcipt comment to this game when Edrich scored his 100th hundred.
"John Edrich completed 100 first-class hundreds in this match. This scorecard agrees with the version published in the Surrey CCC yearbook. It shows that Geoff Howarth was John Edrich's partner when he completed his 100th 100. Some sources have claimed that Graham Roope was Edrich's partner at the time, although it is believed that Roope was actually acting as runner for Howarth. The matter is of interest because Roope was definitely Geoffrey Boycott's partner when Boycott completed his 100th first-class hundred later in the same season."
So perhaps the answer to the quiz question is that both Boycott and Edrich batted with Roope during their 100th hundred or that Roope was in the middle when both scored their 100th hundreds.

Talk about throwing the fox in to the hen house. Tread lightly, Cleasby "we don't play it for fun" here at the WRF.

Thanks to TC for really complicating things .... so Roope WAS running with Edrich but not batting with him.
As for the fox ... didn't we have one stop play at Headingley last season
Excellent stuff,so was the questioner wrong or my answer? I,m none the wiser.
Anyhow ,now you're all so exited, can you tell me who was the first substitute wicket keeper to make a stumping for Yorkshire in a F/C match.i.e.the original W/K is off and our man is keeping instead, where, when, who were opponents and who was batsman?
Thought I'd start with an easy one, just to get you all involved.

If anyone is thinking of answering this question, could I suggest that they first consult the (adjusted) amendment to the erratum of 7 July 2008 to the third, revised edition of the Wisden Cricket Annual 2007.

By the way

I've a sneaking feeling that the answer is David Denton, though I refuse to enter into correspondence over i) what constitutes a first-class match, ii) what constitutes a substitute wicketkeeper, and iii) whether the batsman was actually out of his ground.

Details

1905 match v Cambridge University away. Napier was the batsman, Grimshaw the bowler.
OK,I will now attempt to ask the question I meant to originally but failed so miserably to do.
I want to know the name of the SUBSTITUTE who was not playing in the game and came on to keep wicket instead of the regular keeper, and made a stumping as a SUBSTITUTE,the first time it happened for Yorkshire, and the match venue year, opponents, batsman, bowler and the 'keeper who went off?
I hope I've made myself clear now!
Both correct, mine were obviously far to easy for the experts out there in cyber space.

In response to the earlier question, I seem to recall Simon Guy catching a Durham batsman (Muchall or Stoneman perhaps?) in a game a couple of years ago. Don't have time to look up the details.

Is n't this just changing the question when someone is clever enough to have answered it...
No not at all.
As I've already explained I failed to express my question clearly enough the first time, leaving some ambiguity as to it's interpretation, for
which I've apologised, and the answer was forthcoming, but not the one I was looking for.
It's clear enough now I believe and I invite anyone to attempt to answer it.
Surprisingly no response to my question, which I'll repeat again ,just to ensure you're all aware of it.

This question has been built up so much that I'm expecting a great answer. If it's not Winston Churchill or Danny La Rue then I want my money back.
A bit early to suggest that I may have stumped you all with this one,but I'll leave it for a few days before adding a further clue.
Let me know if you wish me to extend that time.

I can tell you the batsman dismissed by the phantom stumper was Trevor Bailey.

TE Bailey stumped sub ( Rochford) b Wardle 28
at Scarborough September 1951.
Bailey was playing for MCC v Yorkshire and the regular keeper for Yorkshire in that game was D V Brennan

Well done.
April 24 2009, 10:00 PM
That's right Anthony.Interestingly enough Rochford never played a first-clas match for Yorkshire.
A question please?
Obscure quiz questions are good in november but go down like a lead balloon once the season starts. Yorkshire getting very close to losing and you expect anyone to think about who stumped who fifty odd years ago! Save them for the quiet days of winter.

That's a bit rough, Kenny. Cleasby is only trying to add some interest to the site. Besides, you don't have to participate or even open the thread. Be nice!
Didn't mean to sound rude or nasty and I apologise if it came across that way. T'was more an observation than a personal view. Quiz questions fill in nicely in the winter month's when we have nothing to think of other than England's next defeat. April dawns and we think of the great deeds Yorkshire will do all summer. May, June, July and August gives us licence to vent our spleen and September gives us hope for next year. We're still dizzy on the relative success of the season in october and can only begin to think of quiz questions come the dark nights and short days.
As I said, didn't mean to be rude, just being honest.
Hello Kenny,so you couldn't answer my question either, never mind mate, you wern't the only one,but the only one apparently to get upset about it.
Excellent, just the sort of response I expected from some Mr Grumpy.
There's always one who blames the asker ,just because they cannot answer.
Betterr luck next time, but I,hardly expecting big things from your direction.
Thanks to all others for having a go and expressing your support.
Keep quizzing folks!!!!

Am I missing something or has Dominic Cork just entered the room?
I didn't get upset over not knowing the answer and now that I know it I've forgotten it. Not only that, I've forgotten the question as well! That's not to say it was meaningless or unwarrented, just that I'd have given it more thought in november than april. I'd still never have got the answer but I would have remembered the question!
Next question: ''Bring it on.'' If I don't know, I'll tell you in november!
