Sort of like a Rubik's Cube. it has always been my opinion that putting out the batting lineup in the right order, for the right wicket is just about as important as the skill set of the players chosen. I've seen many very good teams who managed to get their batting order wrong beaten by very ordinary teams who managed to get their lineup right.

conversely

April 16 2009, 9:54 AM

I am with the majority on the vote but it doesn't necessarily make me right either!

And there is a distinct difference between what I would pick and who I think Moxon would pick as it seems the 'dream ticket' we all want of Sayers and Vaughan is not the option Moxon is looking at

Sayers and Vaughan is the best combination to open the season with, but politics, egos and other such nonsense will probably have their way. Whatever happened to the captain/coach setting their own batting lineups rather than being dictated to by the ECB?

I doubt the ECB are dictating where Vaughan should bat but that the club are pandering to where Vaughan would like to bat. If Moxon truly believes Yorkshire's best chance of success is with Rudolph opening and Vaughan at three then so be it, he's the coach and paid to make the decision. If he's doing it purely because that's what Vaughan wants then he's making a big rod for his own back. If Vaughan fails he'll walk off into the Sky comm box. Moxon might stick around long enough for us to tell him ''we told you so.''
No time for personal whims or peacemakers but lots of time for men of conviction. Moxon must decide and I'll go along with it. Equally, he must be prepared for the wrath and consequence should it go wrong. Doubt there's a Sky comm box waiting for Moxon.

A two-horse race! I'm VERY surprised at the number choosing Rudolph and Gale.

confusion

April 17 2009, 1:26 PM

Are those voting for Rudi and Gale getting confused with limited overs cricket? because that's who I expect to be the One Day openers

confusion

April 17 2009, 1:40 PM

or are they getting confused with what they think Moxon will pick rather than what we actually think should happen as this would explain why Vaughan is not in the opening combination

Methinks Gale must have had most of his family voting on this.

Weird. Sayers and Vaughan 55 votes
Rudolph and Gale 39 votes

Yet: Sayers and Rudolph 0 votes
Rudolph and Vaughan 0 votes

Feeling Poll-ish?

April 18 2009, 1:00 PM

Given that the season starts tomorrow, we'll close this poll down at midnight (GMT) tonight.

Andrew Gale was seen co-ordinating his voting campaign in the "Shoulder Of Mutton" last night...

But that was three months ago, since when Vaughan's gone.according to you Gale and Lyth refuse to do it,Mags presumably is not an option, which brings us back down to Rudy and Sayers being the only option, and the one in place.
Do we now need another poll then TC?

don't think it matters now.

Moxon and Mags have made their minds up for the season it seems.

the poll was pre-season when we did not have the benefit of the last 2 months selections or vaughans retirement.

I would still favour Lyth or Gale opening with Sayers now Vaughan out the equation and its actually quite good that Rudy has not said he does not want to do it (nor has he said he does?) as that would be a negative message to send out to the opposition

The pedantry involved in this hypothetical arguement is staggering in it's irrelevance.
Rudolph has opened all season, and done very well there,no body else apparently want's the job,and so he'll go on opening till the end of the season, very likely with Joe Sayers.
Any other option would be plain foolish and won't happen.
Can we call it a day now on this particular one?

most of us had stopped talking about this - prior to your aising it again this thread was conducted in April before the first proper game of the season when the debate was both relevant and timely.

The question asked was who you thought SHOULD open the batting - not who WOULD.

In April none of us fancied Rudoplh to do it as he had not done it the previous seasons but had been a success at 4 in the order - why change that?

Vaughan has opened in the past and was the one returning to the fold and needed a place somewhere in the team. Mags as skipper was unlikley to open.

I agree its a pointless debate now as Moxon has made his mind up and as long as Rudy scores a ton and a duck every game he will still open to the end of the season with Joe.

However, pre-season speculation is partly what a forum is about

You're the one who thought it useful to re-introdude a three-month old poll TC,not I.
All I,ve done is to disagree with those who say Rudy should not be doing it.
What's the point in reminding us that most were wrong in their view and that Mags and Moxon were right in going with Rudy and Joe,both of whom average well over 50 in the championship and together with the skipper are Yorkshire's most successfull batters so far this season.

Guilty as charged

July 3 2009, 11:33 AM

yes I confess I did reintroduce the poll thread - but in mitigating circumstances as on another thread you made reference to the openers and the fact that all other posters seemed to not want Rudolph to open the batting. Not sure if you were on the WRF at the time of the poll so I brought it back to the top of the threads for your reference.

Silly old me trying to be helpful to you to then get criticised by you for trying to help you out!

Not at all TC.
Full points for trying to keep me informed as to the past mood of the membership, compared to current opinion.
I really do appreciate all your efforts in trying to educate me into the idiocyncrasies of Yorkshire folk whose opinions seem to change on a daily basis.
Who would they like to open the batting next week?help me ,I can't keep up!!!
