Mags captaincy

Looking at the Durham second innings so far, Mags appears to be thinking its a one day game and he has used 5 bowlers only and given them all equal number of overs.

Should he not be trying his own golden arm? What about Vaughan having a go? Should Rashid not be looking to deliver a long spell of spin from one end?

Do we think Mags has captaincy potential and imagination or will he prove to be another Gough?

And before someone reminds me, yes I do know that he was captain for our 2 victories last season and the last game at Hove!

whatever his merits he has been appointed on a next in line/seniority/buggins turn principle. Not usually a recipe for excellence. That Blackwell was allowed to settle and prosper without Rashid coming on- who has dismmissed him cheaply a few times- defies belief- likewise it was a day before we switched the seamers to different ends. A lot of the time Brearley used all his Middlesex bowlers from both ends in each session, and used high quality spinners (and Rashid is one) as attacking options.

Mags was advised to wake up at Tauton, last year!

He did not do so, but went for the "let it drift until the new ball" approach and then took issue with those Yorkshire members who know more about tactics than he does. Justifying poor taqctics by winning the game. The ends can never justify the means.

So far this season (and it is not very old yet), both team selection (over which he may not have complete control) and tactics (over which, similarly, he may not have complete control), suggest that he is nor really up to the job.

Mags is not Brian Close, but he came near to being so in the winter of 2007/8, when he demonstrated that he could be his own man.

For my money, he should do it "his way" and no-one elses from now on. If his way does not work, then he should stand down as captain at the end of the season.

But he should have tried to do it HIS way before he does so!

"Justifying poor tactics by winning the game. The end can never justify the means"
So does it only count if we win in a certain style? As suggested by the knowledgeable knot of oh-so superior Yorkshire members who know "know more about tactics than he does"....
It's not often you see a captain criticised by his own supporters for one of the games they won last year! Perhaps you would have preferred it if he'd used member's officially sanctioned tactics and lost...
