The Greatest Ashes team of all-time: Herbert Sutcliffe, the first choice

The Independent is running a series on the greatest England Ashes team. They will be nominating one player a week for the next 11 weeks building up to this summer's Ashes series.

Yorkshire's own Herbert Sutcliffe was the first nominee and opens for the all-time England XI.

Will any other Tykes make the team? (Boycott, Trueman, Hirst, Rhodes and Hutton, will surely be considered.)

Who should be in the team? What is your all-time England XI?

Replace Botham with George Hirst; Larwood with Bill Bowes; Laker with Hedley Verity (even though Jim was a Yorkshire lad he ended up at Surrey); Knott with Jimmy Binks. The wicket-keeping position might not be strengthened but I can't see much wrong with the other changes!!!
Now the team proposed is a serious outfit and capable of giving any Australian team a good run for its money. What other English county could put a comparable group of 'greats' into the field? Moreover, I think we could put out a second team that would see off the current England boys

I did toy with Hirst, Bairstow/Binks and Verity. Larwood got the vote because he's from good mining stock and I'm sure could soon become an honourary Yorkshireman. Botham did at least have the sense to make Yorkshire his home and Knott just got the vote (tight pick between him and Ames) because I was always brought up to believe that although Yorkshire produces the best batsmen and bowlers the best keepers come from the garden of the country.

Fair do's Kennyone, I'll go with that. I've always liked Kent and respect their supporters, who are almost as fanatical as ours.
