This is a continuation of a thread from Day 1 of the Championship game against Warwickshire.
But to be fair, Dewsburian, Vaughan has been out of form for Yorkshire and England for a long time. I did a little research:
For Yorkshire, Vaughan has only four scores above 60, and no century, in what is now 30 INNINGS over the past SIX years.
How long can we wait? Is it fair to Adam Lyth who has to cool his heals in the 2nd XI, while Vaughan proves to one and all (and himself) that he just doesn't have it any more?
the place to regain form is the second team. sayers had to do it last year. lyth was dropped after doing nothing wrong and deserves a chance. having said that vaughan won a game with a fine 80 in his last few innings. and generally looks good but is getting out to rash shots. i think gale needs to regain last years form yet.
Every year we do this. We seem to pick one promising young cricketer from the second team and elevate him to the status of saviour. This year we seem to have alighted upon Adam Lyth - who played a few decent innings last year - but so far this year has actually been struggling slightly in the seconds. How can it possibly help his development to bring him into the first team at a time when he's struggling for form and confidence? Last year the favourite messiah was Taylor - who ironically has been batting well in the seconds but has never been mentioned on these pages. If you're looking for a replacement for Vaughan surely he would fit the bill - he could even open for you and allow Rudolph to come in a bit lower down the order. (On the basis that although our opening partnership is working well - I'm sure at least one of our corespondents will still be complaining about Moxon's inspiration on the basis that they're the wrong sort of runs we're scoring...).
In addition to enhancing the reputation of players who are not in the team, we also choose to denigrate the abillities of one of the few World Class players we have. I personally think Michael should stop giving interviews for a while and concentrate on his cricket. He still looks like a quality player to me - and only needs an ounce of luck to start scoring the sort of runs at the kind of pace that actually wins matches.
Dewsburian is right - let's be slightly more objective. Minor distractions aside, Yorkshire are playing pretty well at the moment in all competitions. This isn't the time for wholesale changes - I can see us bowling Warwicks out if we have a bit of luck with the weather...
on the live commentary a quote from yorkshire "we must respect the game" ie we are not interested in batting bonus points. they have not scored a run in the first 3 overs.
The trouble is that this just puts pressure on our lower order batsmen - poor old Andy Gale has to come in again and try and biff some big runs quickly - if we do lose a wicket now i hope we send in Rana or Shahzad instead for 4 or 5 overs....
We should be able to score at 3.5 an over throughout an innings..
If I was one of the youngsters in the dressing room then just having the ex England skipper and all round hero that once was Michael Vaughan in my team would inspire me to even greater efforts. Oh my, whats this I see .... Sayers 134 no. Surely not already having an impact ?
Now where was I ... 333 for 2 .... rubbish Yorkshire, the management don't know what they're doing .... sack the board, sack the board, sack the board.
I think it's the correct strategy for the Tykes to build a declarative total rather than to hole out for an extra bonus point. Without a win in our last twelve CC matches, we need to concentrate on winning. At this stage we can declare in the 500-550 range and have a go at a strong Warwicks batting lineup before the close. (Warwicks have 4 players in the lineup with 40+ career averages.)
We can set up a competitive declaration AND secure maximum batting points as well? It's a great performance - don't misunderstand me - but sometimes we don't seize the initiative as firmly as we should...
True enough, but I don't think you seize the day by chasing the odd bonus point, but you certainly do by setting up a win. Yorkshire have done very well over the past few seasons in accumulating bonus points, but have won precious few games.
Not really quick enough. Any bad weather in the next two or three days and it's likely we won't have time to bowl a strong batting side out twice.
All that can be put right, of course, if Yorkshire bat at 5 or 6 an over for the next couple of hours. Even so, I'd have liked us to have been able to declare after 130 overs.
I suppose we can take it one step at a time and it is good to see Sayers scoring runs again. He now needs to score them a little quicker but more importantly, if we are to build an innings around his batting then those at the other end need to be scoring at a quicker rate too.
2.5 rpo will not win you too many games unless you skittle the opposition when its their turn to bat. 260/2 suggests to me that we batted a little too slow for the conditions. Whilst 500 means we can't lose, at the current rate it means we almost certainly can't win either. Maybe we are having a season long protest over the poor pitches and bonus point system?
As to Vaughan. When has he not looked good? I've never seen him in a poor run of form. Same old same old to me. He looks good and then gets out whilst still looking good. Leopards don't change spots as they say and I can't see Vaughan changing much now. Plenty of beautifully composed 20's and the occassional 70 odd to get us even more frustrated is what I expect. Too good to drop, not good enough to keep a place should be written on his gravestone one day and but for one glorious summer in winter afew years ago that is how test match cricket would remember him also. How long can you ride on the back of a fantastic series? Nigh on a decade now and still the head is above water....just.
Sayers and Mags both closing in on their career-best scores (187 and 188* respectively). Best partnetship for any wicket against Warwickshire is 333...
Its amazing how good out batting line up looks when the top order do their jobs.
If we really needed lots more runs we have an in form Brophy and Rashid still to come followed by the big hitting Rana and Shahzad. Its only Kruis and Hoggard who are genuine tail enders.
Mags gets his best score, 191 no. I'm surprised he's not got a double ton yet in his long career.
Tough for Gale, he'll want to play himself in and get a decent score to secure his place, but it would be better for the team if he played with pace and kept the scoring rate up.
I think he'll want at least an hour of bowling tonight - and hope to score as many runs as possible before then.We could get up to 600 or so - just hope the weather is okay. I think Rashid could be doing a lot of bowling over the next two days and it's a bit scary how ineffective Patel seems to have been.
Martin Hindley is certainly opinionated. I really enjoy his honest, forthright comments. For my books he's one of the best cricket commentators around.
That`s the easy bit scoring 600 runs, now we have the extremely difficult part of getting another 19 wickets. We managed 3 against Worcestershire in a day and a half and Warwickshire are a far better batting side. However, I remain optimistic although it will not be easy. We def will not lose!!!
Some sloppy bowling in the last hour did not help our cause. Kruis giving up a six in "extras" and Rashid getting slapped around was not what I would have expected.
Bowling Warwicks out twice will be a real test of our metal. Someone will have to do something special, and get a 'five-fer' or two to pull this off. But who?
