you could have a look at nysd champions middlesbrough at the newly developed acklam park. boro include liam botham. they have a new pavilion and clubhouse. free entry last time i was there but i bought a raffle ticket.
Can't even turn out to see me in action as we have a bye this week and I've somehow agreed to turn out in a bluddie rounders match! Not sure how my forward defencive prod will adjust to this game! My fast bowling might be useful though because I've been promised there's usually lots of bouncers on show;-)
well if you saw BBC breakfast news this morning the sports reporter had a newly designed bat on show called the 'Mongoose' which was part cricket/part baseball bat and he reckoned they were going to use it in T20 to increase the distance a ball could be hit.
Effectively, the upper half of the normal bat face had been pared down to just be an extension of the handle.
I know Lance Cairns used something a bit different a few years back.
A full programme of matches available in all The Yorkshire Leauges this weekend.
Plenty of top class entertainment on offer and nothing to pay?
You could always pop over to Old Trafford tomorrow as I'll be doing to see Lankies and Essex in an FPT quarter -final,excellent value at only £5 for pensioners, take note Mr Regan!
So far, I've got a Botham in Middlesbrough, rounders at an undisclosed destination, Old Trafford with a heavilly subsidised legion of pensioners, or a tasty burger and pommes frites in France.
I wonder if they're playing cricket at the Greyhound in Tong..?
Rounders in Hull, not at the Circle because they built a carpark and football staduim on it. The staduim where the mighty Tigers will beat those Lancastrian Red Devils and probably send those Magpies swooping ever lower. For a bird that is reputed to like silver they don't see much of it! Who's the next messiah, Jimmy Nail?
Obviously want Hull City to stay up but the week they went third in october I bet a mate a tenner that they'd still go down. Snapped my hand off he did! Win win situation for me and I'll be happy to give him a tenner....well not happy, but not sad either.
You're playing Man Utd's under 13's girl's team so I'm sure you'll do well.
So far I'm strangely drawn to the idea of Stokesly's Seconds.
I could have been watching a Quarter Final at Headingley if it wasn't for Chris Schofield. I wonder if he realises how many people's weekends he spoilt.
Can anyone recommend any more cricket to watch...
A bit unfair there Marsker.
Tomorrow and Sunday are reserved for the quarter-finals of The FPT trophy so it would have been impossible to arrange other county fixtures on these dates, and on Monday there is a match at Headingley.
>>>You're playing Man Utd's under 13's girl's team so I'm sure you'll do well.<<

Is that at Rounders, and could I not get arrested?
Back to cricket. I guess the ECB thought that quarter-finals on a bank holiday weekend was a clever ploy to get the grounds full but only four grounds will be full. Not only that, they'd probably still have been full had they played the matches next thursday. Should have been a full programme of games over the holiday weekend.
i did write decent cricket, monday doesnt count. re sokesley 2nds i have just had a call to say their state of the art drainage scheme might not cope with todays showers. and they bought a new pitch fork as well.
The Academy are playing Cleethorpes at Weetwood in the Yorkshire League on Saturday. I might go along and see a few players who will be in YCCC's Championship winning side of 2013.
On Sunday, Todmorden (with one of the loveliest settings in Yorkshire) play host to Accrington in the first round of the Lancashire League Worsley Cup.
Admission fees will be minimal, the two teams are well matched and both are at the top of their game and you will get a wonderful "northern tea" in the Tea Room at little pain to the pocket.
I will, in all probability, be sat behind the bowlers arm on the Primary School Boundary.
I'm peculiarly drawn towards Todmorden.
Unfortunately however, it clashes with a football fixture of some import.
I've also heard that the Todmorden drainage system isn't all that it should be, and apparently the new scoreboard hasn't been installed in time.
Don't put Todmorton in your Satnav or you may find yourself driving a very long way.
And I speak as one who spent 4 hours on the M62 Carpark this evening.
Surely no one who contributes to this forum would ever knowingly sit - or stand - behind the bowler's arm. People have had their MCC ties confiscated for less!
Kenny - that reminds me of the (true) story from a couple of years ago...
A taxi picked up Earl Spencer's daughter (i.e. Diana's niece) and her friend one Saturday morning. They asked to be taken to Stamford Bridge (to see Chelsea). The foreign taxi driver wasn't aware of the location of this destination, so punched it into his satnav, it calculated the route and off they went. The girls chatted away for a couple of hours or so, until the taxi driver stopped and said that they had arrived. They looked out of the window and were surprised to find themselves in a small Yorkshire town, and not outside a football stadium in London.
Aye, I remember that story and my first thought was ''how could anyone be so daft?'' But, when royalty, or even near royalty is involved you realise it's a very easy mistake to make. If Stamford Bridge had been at home and the taxi driver had kept quiet, I doubt they would have even noticed the difference!
Well, we went to Tod! A glorious, hot & clear sunny day. The natural amphitheatre in which the ground settles was at its very best, but unfortunately a Bank Holiday Fun Fair in the adjoining park, blared out loud "noise" all afternoon. The wittiest comment came from G Lloyd who asked one of the boundary-edge supports whether they thought that the volume could be turned down.
Tod batted first, scoring 202 for 8 with their "stand-in" pro ("Somebody" Khan, there was no scorecard) top-scoring with 51 (and a collection), after which he was promptly out. However, he had held the batting together and 200+ was always going to be competitive. Ormerod and Silva bowled well and Hanson very well.
Pie, Peas & gravy, with a chippy "butty" for my son, and a cup of tea, came to a staggering £3.50. Homemade pickled onions and mint sauce were available as extras, but "free of charge"!
In reply, Acc got off to a flier and at one point needed less than 3 an over with 9 wickets in hand, but a clatter of wickets swept away the middle order, Lloyd getting the best ball of the day, leaving the tail with far more to do than they were capable of achieving.
In consequence, the end was a bit of a tame anti-climax. There could only be one outcome and one winner. Time limit cricket is really much better. Playing for the draw sometimes creates far more tension than can be secured in one day cricket.
Total cost of the day for the two of us was £14.
£4's each for admission, 50p car parking, £3.50 for tea, £1 for "Somebody" Khan's 50 and £1 for the raffle. Every penny well spent!
Thanks for this, Tony. Living here in a largely cricket-less Canada, you've made me very nostalgic for my earlier life in Yorkshire.
I spent many a happy Saturday/Sunday afternoon watching the Birstall Cricket Club play, usually with my late uncle - and your
evocative piece brought back the memories.
That's a most splendid and generous description. It sounds frankly idyllic and I wish i'd been there instead of following the pathetic actions of a group of over-paid footballers who frankly don't deserve the support they receive.
For anyone who's interested in my Bank Holdiay schedule I've been to Scarborough today. There was no cricket (sadly) but the sun shone and there were donkeys on the beach.
Alex - we need to talk about Birstal Cricket Club at some point..
Regards my weekend, found out at rounders what I know about my cricket. Great eye, no power in the shot. Got a couple of rounders but only by clever positioning. Took a few good catches in the field and it's a great game for deep catching practise. Enjoyed the fun and watching the football after.
Who'd have thought Hull would ever be a division above Newcastle, both Sheffield's and two above Leeds? Not been pretty these past few month's but as of now Hull are 9th in the premiership.
I'm sure Newcastle will be back before too long, just as I'm sure Leeds will. Teams with the biggest following will eventually get it right because money through the turnstiles does eventually buy success and eventually, by accident or design a manager will be skillful enough or lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
Many mistakes have been made at Newcastle but they have a good man for the level they now find themselves in, with Ian Dowie, not so sure about Alan Shearer's credentials. It's easy to say what went wrong from a studio chair, not so easy when yours is the tried tactic. I'd liked to have seen Alan Hansen and Andy Gray as managers at some point because to hear them neither would ever have lost a game.
... and if they did, it would almost certainly be the referee's fault, especially where Andy 'if you watch this incident 27 times on 15 different camera angles, you can see he was clearly offside - disgraceful refereeing' Gray is concerned.
