He's in form. He's just got 81 against an experienced Leics 2nd XI attack of Harris, Malik, Masters, Crowe and Henderson to win the Trophy match. He also knocked up another century at the weekend. I don't know anything about his wicketkeeping, but the boy can certainly bat.
Isn't this the moment?
Guy hasn't done anyhting with the bat to justify his continued selection - let's see what the young man can do on Thursday. Guy can save himself for the four day game - assuming Brophy is still not fit..
i think you underestimate Simons valuable contribution with the bat in last nights T20 game - we would have struggled without his valuable 10 runs.
However, perhaps if Bluey junior had played instead of Lyth we would never have got down to number 10 in the order!
Lets face it - Bairstow appears to have more natural talent (and a damn good pedigree) than the other options and if we never give him a go at the top level we will never find out how good he is.
We will probably pick him when he is in the middle of a bad trot in the seconds
Depite his useful batting last night I still don't think Guy is cut out for eithr stumping or batting for the first team, as he just makes too many mistakes. Hopefully, according to the Yorkshire website, Brophy will be fit for Saturday's game.
He batted well yesterday as well, he got 63. Very strong and uncomplicated technique, no big flourishes of the bat, quite old fashioned almost in his batting. Very strong towards mid on and mid off, where I reckon he must have got at least half his runs yesterday. Other than Bluey it was a poor performance from the 2nd`s.
Guy is a good keeper, but unfortunately will always be remembered as being too good a batsmen for the seconds and not good enough for the firsts. Some players can make the step up others for some reason or another, cant manage it.
He would have been an ideal choice for today's match. He could hardly do worse than Lyth (3 runs in 4 T20 inning) who unbelievably is s till in the 20-20 side.
Just partly in response to a comment by Triple Centurian on another thread, could I say that I don't think Bairstow will necessarily get big runs - or even many runs at all - in the first team right now. The point is that he, like Adil Rashid, is a very exceptional talent. I don't think anyone would have to watch him bat for more than half an hour to realize that. Once your exceptional youngsters are getting hundreds and then double hundreds in the second team, there's only one place for them to be. This is where a selector has to make big decisions in the interests of the club as a whole.
I wasn't David Byas's biggest fan, but he took a bold step with Rashid and it proved to be the right one. I think we need the same kind of vision now. I don't wish to run Adam Lyth down, by the way, but I saw him in three matches early on and he looked a little out of sorts (despite his 150 in the one-dayer at Kidderminster). Perhaps he is going through a bit of second-season syndrome, though he has put in a couple of excellent performances also and will surely be a very good player.
If Bairstow plays who is to be dropped? I can't see a compelling case to rest anyone at present. There may be an opportunity for him if Gerard Brophy is unavailable for the Sussex match but would we be asking too much of him to contribute as a batsman and keep well in his debut match? Dewsburian would know this better than most.
Bairstow's father was an exceptional talent and one of my favourite players. (How I wish he had lived to see the 2001 championship. He would have burst with pride.) Even he found it hard to keep wicket and score runs in the early stages of his career. He was approaching 30 before his contributions with the bat were much more than cameos. This is not an argument for not playing the boy; it's more a request that we do not expect too much too soon.
Well he has just finished unbeaten on 202, sharing in a unbroken 4th wicket stand of 358 with Joe Root to win a game at Oakham which we were always second best in, until the last day. Whats more remarkable is they knocked off the 400 required (after being 44-3) in 79 overs
Agree he has to play tomorrow. Brophy is not in the squad (Alex`s match preview) and Guy is. If Brophy is injured surely Bairstow HAS to play, he is our future keeper, Guy is the past.
I completely agree guy is offering nothing. lets get bairstow in now while he's in good form! i mean talent obviously runs in the family........... have you seen his sister?
yes,, he is in very good form but what i think he lacks is professionalism... i heard on the grape vine that he was smashed off his tits on friday night prior to an academy game on the saturday! This does not show me that he is ready
iv just been informed that my prior statement was incorrect and harsh, i think that the talent that lad has is incredible and he should get a chance in the first team immediately! This boy is a star of the future!
You know, if I didn't know better, I'd suspect that certain members of our second team had nothing better to do for the afternoon than sit around a computer posting flippant messages and inventing silly names....
(A lot like being at work in fact.)
I think young Bairstow has a certain rugged charm...
