Demolition derby

What a bloody season. Poor results on the field; no webcam; no WRTV and now no live broadcast. What's next?

On the upside, this partnership is going very well, and may make the difference between win and draw. Can Adil and Ajmal get the 4th batting point?

Who says the bonus points system produces boring cricket? The boys have just got the 4th batting point with one ball to spare - with a 6! With four overs to go they needed 6 an over to reach the milestone. They kept their heads and achieved it. Well done. Every point for the rest of the season is likely to be priceless.

Just arrived back home to see the great news of our 8th wicket century stand.

It is good to see Rashid making runs, as he is very talented all rounder, and Shahzad is having another excellent match. After 400 reached, let us hope our bowlers can make quick inroads into the Hampshire top order second time round.

500.....

August 13 2009, 1:25 PM

.....would be better. No more bonus points at stake now so we just bat on and on. Make sure we do not have to bat again as Tahir on a last day turner would be a problem.

Re: Adil Rashid

August 13 2009, 2:32 PM

Rashid is a talented all rounder, so can someone tell me why he bats at 8? There is no way on this earth that he should bat behind Bresnan. Furthermore if Yorkshire (& England) are serious about developing his skills, he should bat at 6. He is at least as good a technical bat as Brophy, & has far more of a future than the S. African has

I don't agree with batting on and on. The pitch is probably getting deader and deader (as predicted) and we need to leave plenty of time to get 10 wickets. If we are still batting at tea we should declare.

Tea is fine

August 13 2009, 2:58 PM

Good time to declare is about 30 mins time, then have 4 overs at them before tea. We should have 500 by then anyway. Record 8th wicket partnership already broken v Hants (152, 1904). 292 is the record 8th wicket partnership for us against all teams!!! This is Shazads highest first class score.

Shahzad out. A few sixes from Deon, then declare?

... why has Hoggard come out to bat in front of him?

Hoggy in

August 13 2009, 3:06 PM

No sixes from Deon and no quick fire 50 from him, as they have sent Hoggy out.

I agree with Stuart - declare a few overs before tea. Probably wanted Hoggy to guide Rashid to a fine century. Maybe he will next turn on his bowling skills!

Rashis has his ton, and it's eight overs until tea. It's now or never.

Its important we get it right. But the worse thing we can do from this position is to declare too late and throw away time and overs. I would declare at tea or 10 minutes before.

We're surely in a posiion where we cannot lose, therefor why dont we give ourselves the best chance to win. Must declare at tea ?

tea

August 13 2009, 3:47 PM

Tea will not be taken now until we lose our last wicket or in 30 minutes time so we may as well just hit out and get as many runs as we can.

Maybe I've missed something, but batting on here doesn't reduce the time we have to force the victory. Hants still have to get these runs to make us bat again, and the more we get at a faster rate, the more Hants have to do to get safe.

30 overs remaining

No overs deducted as tea will now be taken. 30 overs remaining today and 96 tomorrow. I would like 3 or 4 wickets by close of play!!

After Bresnan's spell, I would bowl Shahzad and Rashid in tandem for a while - they must be full of confidence and Hampshire batsmen may slog and surrender!

Should McGrath be dropped

August 13 2009, 6:15 PM

Yorkshire may be in the untenable position of having to drop their captain if they are to have a chance of staying in the first division. He's a walking wicket, is dropping critical catches and seems bemused as to the appropriate strategy.

Has Yorkshire ever dropped their captain mid- season for poor form? What is our record under McGrath's captaincy.

McGrath's form can be discussed and will be at later date, tomorrow is the most important day we have faced this season 8 wickets and maybe a bit of batting may turn around this appalling season, lets all hope for another good day tomorrow.

Wonky points system

August 13 2009, 7:02 PM

This match is a good example of the wonky, out-of-touch points system currently being used in the Championship. It's fair to say that the Tykes have completely dominated the match, but if it ends in a draw, Yorkshire would earn 11 points to Hampshire's 8 points - a net gain of 3 points!

Re: Wonky points system

As has been said ... lets just hope we can get the 8 wickets quickly. Rashid's batting is an interesting one. If Adil can get beyond 10-15 mins he's a good batsman ... but in the time I mentioned he tends to try & hit everything & far too often gets out to a ball he should have left alone

Dropped catches

August 14 2009, 8:45 AM

The BBC Sport report states that Bresnan dropped Vince, yet other reports state that Mags dropped Carberry. Were there two dropped catches or just the one?

Re: Dropped catches

August 14 2009, 10:11 AM

I don't think we should focus too much on dropped catches unless we know for sure that it was an easy chance that went begging.

I remember watching from the south stand at Headingley in an FPT recently, when Adam Lyth ran at a hundred miles an hour around from deep square leg to long on and flung himself skyward to try and catch the ball. He just managed to get a fingertip to it, but it went to ground, and for four. Several reports (included on the club website) said that Lyth had dropped a good chance. Not fair.
