Neither Bressy nor Rashid did much to enhance their near-term England chances. Bressy in particular was really hammered (2-76 in 10 overs) and only scored 4. While Rashid was also pulverized (55 runs in 8 overs), at least he scored a quickfire 18.
I know it's not a popular opinion here on the WRF, but neither looks quite like they belong at this level yet. Rashid will probably fit in eventually (if he can cut down on the one or two rubbish balls he bowls per over), but in my opinion Bresnan is out of his depth. He's a very good county-level pro who for reasons I can't quite fathom has found his way into the ECB's good books. Methinks Yorkshire will see more of Bresnan next year than one might currently expect.
True, but England have shown great perseverance in their quest for "the next Botham" before. I wonder how many people on the Red Rose Forum were saying Flintoff looked out of his depth in his early days with England, and look how much they saw of him over the next few years. In fact, if I remember correctly, Flintoff was a considerably more leftfield decision than even Bresnan at the time - he had a batting average of about 3 (ok, a slight exaggeration) and Lancashire didn't even bother to bowl him, such were his skills with the ball. In fact, he wasn't a million miles from the way Schofield turned out in his later days with the county.
Having said which, I think we'll have Bresnan during the tests next year, and probably the one-dayers, and probably likewise with Rashid. Broad and Swann are in possession at the moment, and I think Rashid is being saved for a later date.
