MATCH FACTS

September 16-19
Yorkshire vs Sussex
Hove County Ground
Start time: 10:30

PREVIEW: Another in a series of "must-win" matches sees Yorkshire take on demotion rivals Sussex at Hove. While Yorkshire will be weakened without Adil Rashid and Tim Bresnan who are on England duties, and will again be playing without an overseas player (for the 11th time in 15 matches), the Tykes will field a competitive side. The only real decision Martyn Moxon will need to make is whether to go with two spinners and add Ajmal Rafiq or go with the extra seamer in Patterson.

Yorkshire from: Jacques RUDOLPH, Joe SAYERS, Anthony McGRATH (cap), Andrew GALE, Jonathan BAIRSTOW, Gerard BROPHY (wkt), Ajmal SHAHZAD, Matthew HOGGARD, Deon KRUIS, Ajmal RAFIQ, David WAINWRIGHT, Steve PATTERSON, Adam LYTH

re match.

September 16 2009, 6:39 AM

The weather is set fair down here on the south coast, and looks good for all 4 days. Temp around 20 degrees and lots of sunshine.

This doesn't reflect the mood of the local cricket followers. They're convinced they're for the chop and deservedly so. Seems that both north and sarf the feeling in the air, is one of doom and despair.

It's hardly a "must win" game. Yorkshire have a points advantage over Sussex so as long as it's a draw that will remain the case.

Hampshire at Headingley is more attractive than Notts at Trent Bridge.

I'm happy to call this one a "Must win".
It's been a long and at time depressing season. I hope the players are able to take the field in the right frame of mind and do justice to their obvious ability. It would be a good toss to win.

Next week would be much less streessful if we win this one ... so knowing Yorkshire it will be a draw.

Joking apart I agree we should go for a win ... the problem in recent weeks (Basingstoke apart) is that we've only started batting once we're in trouble

Acording to Cricinfo the team is

Yorkshire team
JA Rudolph, JJ Sayers, A McGrath*, AW Gale, JM Bairstow, GL Brophy, A Shahzad, A Lyth, DJ Wainwright, MJ Hoggard, Azeem Rafiq

Only 4 bowlers?

September 16 2009, 10:22 AM

According to Cricinfo - Lyth plays and we only have two seamers in Shahzad and Hoggy. Looks like mags might be doing a lot of bowling.
This seems a bit negative to me - we look as if we're packing the side with batting to try and avoid defeat. Not sure that's a good frame of mind in which to start the game. If five batsmen aren't enough I'm not sure six will be...

Bloody mad impetuous Sayers charging down the pitch again..
According to cricinfo we just got 6nb. How does that happen? Neither batsman has been credited with a six.

Strange but true (part one): Sayers was out while I went to the photocopier. I'm blaming myself again.

I'm still marvelling at the thought that Sayers was stumped. I'm willing to bet that this has never happened before....
It's worth noting that Sussex are considerably weakened by the absence of Joyce who seems to have scored most of their runs so far this year....

A "must win" - of course it's a must win. In fact if we win and hold them to 3 points or less (i.e. no batting points) we CAN'T BE DEMOTED.

Rudy may be our MVP but he certainly blots his copybook on a regular basis and when we most need him. 5 ducks on the season know going in at #1.

Rudi ducks

September 16 2009, 1:01 PM

Yes it has not been a great success, he seems to get out in the first over far to many times. Once in he usually goes on and gets a big score but he would do that at 4 anyway. In an article recently on the opening situation Rudi himself does not feel it has been a success either.

Rudi don't lose that number

September 16 2009, 1:12 PM

It would be a shame if we go down in part because Moxon was too pig-headed or short-sighted to put out the most logical batting order. Of course Rudi should be going in at 4: the results and his temperament prove it. He's an absolutely natural stroke maker. Leave the openening duties to the likes of Joe Sayer and his ilk.

The lads seem frozen with fear at the moment. This isn't turning out like I expected. Another wicket and Sussex are well into our middle order.

A true captain's innings by the out-of-form McGrath is what is needed. But will he produce when we most most need him to?

Rudolph in his own words...

September 16 2009, 1:28 PM

The scary thing is that the stats say I look like I will score more runs this year than the previous two, said the former Test and one-day international.

But the thing that has happened since I have started opening is that there has been a tendency to get out earlier more than batting at four or five.

Those big scores have really saved my season if I can say that. I have had a lot of low scores but quite a few high ones.

The rout is on...104-5

September 16 2009, 2:01 PM

A very worrisome start for you lot, as you're obviously intent on bottling it. And you opted for an extra "batsmen." Maybe Yorkshire fans just expect too much from what is obviously a demoralized, underperforming, mediocre side. All of your so-called stars have failed in the most important match of the year.

I would think that anything less than 250 and Sussex could well win this. GO SUSSEX!

No overseas player

September 16 2009, 2:15 PM

I assume Chawla (3-27 so far) is Sussex's overseas player. Where's ours?

The decision not to replace Naved, is just another of a litany of errors made and "fag packet" tactics employed by Yorkshire management this season. (batting Rudolph as an opener, not bringing in Chris Taylor, failing to play two spinners when conditions dictated it, etc.) We are playing with one hand tied behind our backs, while fighting for our lives to stay in the premier division.

And with that, I'm off to bed.

GO YORKSHIRE!

September 16 2009, 2:41 PM

This is not the time to rake over old arguments and tedious obsessive theories. There's a long way to go in this game - I reckon we bat as far as number 10 - we could still get up to 250/300. Remember last year - Wainwright and Rafiq are both centurians and Shahzad is no mug...

Slow learners?

September 16 2009, 2:43 PM

Some might argue that our best "batsmen" are yet to come. Besides, a 100 run stand and we are right back in the match.

I'm so disappointed with Rudolph and McGrath. They both seem that have an uncanny ability to fail just when we need them to get stuck in.

I've reluctantly come along to the view that Moxon and McGrath have been batting Rudolph in the wrong spot all season. It's too bad neither seem to be able to learn from experience. I think Moxon's time with the club is coming to an end.

Come on Andrew and Gerard...save it for us!

Re: Slow learners?

September 16 2009, 2:48 PM

Very slow batting, so even if we get to 120 overs we'll be lucky to get to 300 and 3 bonus points, let alone 400!

Alas, if we don't get to 200, Sussex could well pass us into 7th place even with a draw. Remember they have more wins, so we have to have at least one more point than they do to stay up, since wins break a tie on points.

September 16 2009, 3:04 PM

A poor day so far but we may improve, do not write us off yet. Their leg spinner is causing havoc and ours is wasting his talents playing for England in a meaningless 1 day series. Their overseas player is on the pitch playing while ours is thousands of miles away.

This must be the Rashid who many people were wanting to be left out of the first team a month or so ago.

I wondered earlier how many times this season Yorkshire's last 5 wickets had outscored the first 5. Given that the score was 104 for 5, it could easily happen again.

Not a bad mini-recovery, but the next 10-20 overs should set tone of the match. 250+ would be a good recovery considering our start. A 9-point draw would assure that Sussex don't pass us in the table.

As you say, Brian, "I wondered earlier how many times this season Yorkshire's last 5 wickets had outscored the first 5. Given that the score was 104 for 5, it could easily happen again."

Well, no doubt we all hope it does indeed happen again. But one wonders: do the guys who get the team into this position, scoring at the pace of an arthritic snail, or often scarcely scoring at all, as well as placing unfair burdens on the lower half of the order, and on the bowlers -- do they feel any sense of shame? Or even responsibility?

Kolpaks

September 16 2009, 4:05 PM

I see Sussex have got Murray Goodwin, Corey Collymore AND Dwayne Smith in as Kolpaks in addition to an overseas signing in Chawla. Domestic cricket really is turning into a bit of a farce isn't it ?

A bit of googling late and .... Kolpak = any player from any nation which has an associate trading relationship with the EU

Forget the youth set up chaps, just go through the test nations that trade in Europe and sign 11 stars - safety guaranteed !!

Kolpaks

September 16 2009, 4:14 PM

3 Kolpaks AND an overseas player is indeed a farce. As much as it may count against us I'm proud that Yorkshire don't go down the Notts/Durham/Sussex route of Kolpaks, Overseas signings and County imports. Yes, we may struggle at times as a result but I'm happy that we produce good enough players and don't need to resort to such skullduggery. That said we should not cut off our nose to spite our face and a quality strike bowler is required for next season to add to the excellent home grown players in residence.

September 16 2009, 4:32 PM

A potentailly match-saving-relegation-avoiding inings from Yorkshire's captain-designate. It's worth pointing out that it was Mr Gale who took himself off to the seconds to get himself into some sort of form in preparation for this game. It's also worth recognising that Andy is prepared to tailor his natural attacking game in the interests of the team and the overrall match situation. Our most improved player of the season without a shadow of a doubt.

well getting back to the main and only topic I'm bothered about today and for the next 3, we finished on 274 for 7 ,quite happy with that after the early shock of Rrdie, if we can get that 300 bonus point and stop them getting the 3rd bowling point 17 over left for that its not been too bad a day.

Once again the White Rose tail wags furiously. 104/5 is now 274/7 with Dave and Ajmal currently enjoying an unbeaten 65 run partnership. If only our top order showed the same fighting spirit we may have been free from the worries of relegation.

Just come in and chaecked the score 274/7 seems like a decent recovery from one stage, don't mind only having 4 bowlers when 2 are spinners, Hoggie and the Shazzler with an opening burst then the spin twins can bowl most of the day with Mags/Rudi to bowl a few if needed.

If we can get to 300 and only be 7/8 down after 120 then at least we would be ahead in the bonus points stakes. I heard several people say this is a real grafting pitch so not too worried about our RR and anyone who went or listened how much did it spin on day 1?

Top order bottles it...again

September 16 2009, 8:54 PM

Our top order should be ashamed. They shouldn't be constantly putting the middle order and tail in these positions. I'm starting to think that Rudolph, Sayers and McGrath are not "big match" players (how often do any of them play a match-winning innings?) and almost always bottle it when we most need them.

But hurray for the bottom order...true Yorkshire grit!

early days

September 16 2009, 8:58 PM

Difficult to judge without seeing a ball bowled, anyone down there at the game, please find web access some how and post a match report.

I suspect it's about even although we'd all have taken the close of play score from 104 - 5 and probably have settled for it after the 3rd ball.

Their spinner is a test player, ours are inexperienced young lads, but, both a damned good cricketers, read the game well, play hard and are not to be under estimated.

I think however the day had a very clear turning point, the moment in early afternoon when the Sussex fan joined our discussion in a predictable and boorish way. Every time fans from opponents join the board, our performance suddenly improves. In recent years Durham and a certain 'Nasty Notts' helped us along the way!

I've done a few calculations to look at average partnerships this season. I know how you all love statistics. So average (completed) partnerships in the County Championship this year, excluding the current match:

1st wicket: 47.0
2nd wicket: 29.7
3rd wicket: 63.2

8th wicket: 47.1
9th wicket: 43.8
10th wicket: 23.7

The numbers say it all.
