a further article by CMJ was tucked away on the same page as the Hoggy-splash in yesterdays Times and gave some further revelations about Athers approach to the game.
Apparently he once ran a second run v the Aussies after a throw at the stumps had deflected off his bat and beaten the backing up fielder. He claims to have done this deliberately knowing it was not within the Spirit (but within the Rules) of the game as he knew it would rattle the Aussies.
Shame this was almost overlooked in the Hoggy news as it is further evidence of how Athers played the game and why perhaps we always struggled to be successful under his type of leadership - I would have thought upsetting the Aussies deliberately was only going to end up in one outcome and the results would appear to testify to this.
