The U19 tour of Bangladesh started with defeat in the single Youth Test. All three Yorkshire players on the tour were in the eleven, with Rafiq as captain.

Bangladesh won by two wickets in a closely-fought and low-scoring match.

Bangladesh Under-19 157 for 8 (Haque 58*, Briggs 5-50) and 172 beat England Under-19 221 (Rafiq 53) and 107 (Bates 27, Hasan 2-20, Rahman 2-7) by two wickets

There were mixed fortunes for our boys:

Joe Root (opening): 21 and 14
Charlie Roebuck (no. 4): 2 and 0
Azeem Rafiq: (no.6): 53 (top score) and 4

Rafiq's bowling: 24-4-75-1 (plus a run out and a catch) and 8-1-23-0

Eight England players were playing in their debut Youth Test.

best watch out - former Yorkie Mark Robinson has just been appointed as u19 manager for this winter so he had better keep his hands off our lads playing and not try and tap them up for a move down to the south coast

No Yorkshire seamers represented at U19 level - a reminder that the much vaunted 'crop of youngsters' upon which so many hopes are pinned are not that young really.

I notice that Rafiq and Root are still putting up notable performances. Root top-score with 54 and Rafiq took 3-18 as the U19s lost to Bangladesh by 1 run. Both Yorkies should be fixtures in the Yorkshire one-day and Twenty-20 teams next season.

As I mentioned elsewhere recently, Lee, OHD and Sanderson are all 20 years old. Given that we're hoping to see something from them in the first team next season, I don't think this is a bad thing. Under-19 seamers haven't been prominent in the first division in recent years.

4th ODI

October 29 2009, 1:21 PM

England didn't bat well (all out for 144), so are prtobably heading for another defeat. However, Joe Root (batting at 3, though at the crease in the first over) scored 54.

As it stands, Root's batting and Rafiq's bowling are topping the English series averages.

Strange stuff

Bangladesh must have a decent team at this age group! Or do the conditions make that much difference? I suppose we have a young team that have only ever played in English conditions - this is the experience that will stand them in good stead for the future!

Engalnd uner 19s win the 5th ODI

October 31 2009, 8:46 PM

England were worthy winners in the 5th ODI beating Bangladesh by 5 wickets. Rafiq did well taking 3-36 in 10 overs and Root scored 19. Charlie Roebuck had a poor match with a duck, and giving up 23 in three overs for no wickets.

Re: Engalnd uner 19s win the 5th ODI

November 3 2009, 9:36 AM

won the 6th ODI as well with all 3 Yorkshire boys playing

wickets for Rafiq (but expensive)

runs for Root (but slowly)

little from Roebuck (did not bowl and batted late on when run chase on)

Looks like we are starting acclimatise to the conditions or perhaps the Bangladeshis are putting out some reserve players for their own development?

I would much prefer to see these boys playing 4 day cricket out there instead of the plethora of one dayers so far

Bangladesh win the 7th ODI

November 5 2009, 5:35 AM

Roabuck 40 and Rafiq 31 and 1-29. I see Joe Root was picked as the England "man-of-the-series."

Good show, lads!

Re: Bangladesh win the 7th ODI

Bangladesh always seem to more than hold their own in the younger age group game whilst most of our international youngsters seem to get overtaken in the next phase of their career. It will be interesting to see how many from the current series make it to full status, I'd guess far many more from Bangladesh will do so.
Not sure what that proves, if anything?
