Had a great year for the seconds and academy last season and got a 50 on debut for firsts as well.
he's now doing really well for the U-19s on tour in bangladesh.
he's long been tipped for the top here in sheffield (same club as Michael Vaughan, Sheffield Collegiate) but i have never seen him bat as unfortunately work commitments preclude me from watching second XI games.
i'd be really interested to know the opinions of those that have seen him play and how he rates in comparison to our other young players coming through.
I have seen him bat a few times over the last couple of years. His strength seems to be that he has a lot of time to play his shots - which is a prime attribute for a top class player - and he appears to have a suitable temperament. He is as good a bat as anyone else in the academy and second teams but from there it is a big step up. One concern at this stage would be his slight frame although that can develop.
He is also capable of taking wickets and I have even seen him keep wicket.
The next two seasons will be key to his development - whether he moves up into a higher grade or falls by the wayside as many seem to do.
His first involvement for the full County side was encouraging. What Sam said about temperament and time to play shots was fully endorsed by his display against Essex. He had a good range of strokes and anchored the innings in a very mature way for a young man who looks about twelve! I suspect he has the attributes of a top class player - not the least of those would be modesty.
I also was fortunate enough to witness his 1st team debut. His poise and manner at the crease were obvious even before his first ball. Here is a young man who has talent in abundance, and the temperament to deliver it. I hope he gets a few chances (at least) in the 1st team next year.
i think rooty is rubbish cant hit ball off the square.. need the get in gym, he technically classs but slow as **** , we,ll seee him crumble gainst big stuff next yr.
If we start removing posts because of poor spelling then we'll end up with no posts to read or spell checks galore before submitting.
The offending post was poorly written and the sentiment and view is very much in the minority but, it was still an opinion and we should respect his opinion even if we think it wrong. If he'd written as poorly whilst saying Root would be in the England side by August I'm guessing his grammar would have been excused?
But it's nice to know that young Joes has mates - and/or a younger brother - who's happy to try and wind him up like this!
Might even be Mr Root himself...
I always take posts from irregular or new posters between the hours of 10.30 pm and midnight with a pinch of salt.
Whilst we do have some regular overseas posters (and indeed forum owners!) who are on a different time clock to those of us in Yorkshire, they tend to be sober and sensible in these hours of posting!
