Squad v South Africa

I see that the Telegraph and Dobell both predict the same squad for the SA tour, with six of our lads in the squad:

Root, Rashid, Plunkett and Bairstow plus Ballance and Lyth

I'm sure they have better contacts than I have but I am surprised to see Lyth and Woakes in there and would have thought Compton and Footitt were the more likely names.
I would prefer to see them move forward and pick Vince but can understand Bell being in the 17. Hope to see him doing more drinks carrying and sage advice giving than batting this tour.
In a perfect world Buttler would be left out and probably Davies bought in as cover in order to give Bairstow a clear run with the gloves.

Think the squad is named tomorrow so we will see what we will see. There's usually a surprise in there somewhere.

Interesting comments on Lyth in both pieces: I too thought his England chance had gone for now but perhaps I was wrong- it would be a big vote of confidence if he is selected in the squad, even if he doesn't start the series. Goo to see Ballance back in the mix too- I'm convinced he has an international future.

Re: the bowling, I think losing Wood and Finn is a big blow, but it may open the door to Plunkett. In his second coming as a Test cricketer he's been unfortunate enough to encounter some particularly unresponsive pitches- Lord's v SL last year stands out in the memory- so it will be good to see him get a chance on some rather spicier surfaces out in SA. I would also prefer Footitt to Woakes; I think Woakes is a good bowler but, similarly to the debate on Patto on another thread, I think he performs a similar role to Anderson so think England need something different to balance their attack. Rashid will probably be in the squad but should prepare himself for more practice carrying drinks.

Looking at the suggested squad I wouldn't take Bell, Lyth, Jordan or Plunkett.

Quite like the idea of Tom Curran or maybe Jamie Overton as a slightly left field option.

Said before I would give KP one last chance replacing Bell as the experience. I don't care about trust issues. I don't trust Bell to score runs.

Agreed on Ballance. I was never convinced at 3. He would be great at 5.

I would play Woakes. He has upped his pace.

Last time with England in S Africa, 2009/10, KP played in all 4 Tests and scored 171 runs at 25.28. Bell scored 313 at 44.71, second only (in runs and average) to Paul Collingwood.

Losing Wood is a real blow, and Stokes cannot be 100% certain. Finn is injured as often as Finn is tall. So it's Anderson & Broad + AN Other + SO Else + one dodgy spinner, probably.

Woakes, Jordan, Plunkett are the safer options. All can bat and field. Whether they can bowl, at that level, is to be discovered. Woakes I used to think too slow, but he seems to have put on quite a few mph. He is also a proven wicket taker, and probably has it over Plunkett in that respect, as Brooks has it over Liam for us.

Outside the group, who knows? I would consider CRAIG Overton, rather than his big girl's blouse brother. Of the young pacemen I would have gone for Ollie Stone, but I think he too is injured.

Good luck, ECB. And don't forget Tim Bresnan.

Ballance recalled, along with Compton.
No Bell or Rashid though.

A quick look at the squad for SA reveals no place for Plunkett.
It's difficult to understand what he can have done wrong having trooped around the UAE in a yellow bib for weeks on end.
Why select the lad for the UAE in the first place?

Full squad:

Alastair Cook, Moeen Ali, James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow, Gary Ballance, Stuart Broad, Jos Buttler, Nick Compton, Mark Footitt, Alex Hales, Chris Jordan, Samit Patel, Joe Root, Ben Stokes, James Taylor, Chris Woakes

For once the press were led up the garden path. I suppose England feel that they need a reasonably defensive spinner for the SA tour, and pointless taking Rashid on that basis. I hope they explain why Plunkett's stock has fallen so much as drinks waiter that he doesn't get a place in the squad at all. On the one hand I would rather someone be left out of a squad if they are not going to play, but on the other this seems very harsh. Pleased for Ballance. Will be interesting to see where he is in the pecking order. They could go:

Cook, Compton, Hales, Root, Taylor, Stokes, Bairstow, Ali, Anderson, Broad, Footitt/Jordan/Woakes

I guess Ballance is competing with Compton and Hales for a place - Hales can open or go in first wicket down.

I see that Rashid is likely to play in the Big Bash. A better use of his time than drinks carrying, you would think

Root was a no-brainer; pleased for Jonny; delighted for Gary; resigned re. Adil and don't think he'd have got a big game anyway; outraged for Liam. If you don't want a real pace-man in South Africa, where do you want one?

Samit Patel? Not for me, sorry.
Especially with his lack of match practice.

I don't disagree with the selection apart from the omission of Plunkett on South African pitches, particularly when Finn and Wood are absent. Woakes should be in the one day side but not the test squad.

Early guess at the first test XI

Cook
Hales
Compton
Root
Taylor
Stokes
Buttler
Moeen
Broad
Anderson
Footitt

Crazy re Plunkett especially with Wood and Finn injured. If they had no intention of picking him for SA on their fast pitches, why trail him around the UAE carrying drinks. He has not played for 2 months, so how can he be worse now than in September.

I think your team Seadog is not far off the mark. Could be very good news for us, if that side plays all next summer as well.

Having picked Compton & Balance who both hail from south African side of the equator it's maybe a surprise that a place could not also be found for KP.
Well not really I suppose but I would like to have seen it if only for the outbursts from his detractors.

Re: Squad v South Africa

I'm disappointed for Plunkett: I think he's a better bowler than Woakes or Jordan and he's been dragged around without playing a lot recently so it seems very harsh to leave him out as soon as they tour a country where the surfaces should suit his bowling.

Not too bothered about Rashid as the chance of him playing must have been virtually nil anyway, however I've previously voiced my concerns about the England team wanting to turn him into a one-day specialist and the effect this may have on his game, so if this is another step in that direction it's a concern. Would rather have taken Ansari than Patel if fit too.

Pleasantly surprised by Compton's inclusion; our top order needs more solidity and Compton looks as well-equipped as anyone to provide this. He could open with Cook or bat 3. Glad to see Ballance back too: another option at 3 or he may compete with Taylor for the number 5 slot, which would be my preference. Bell has been poor for two years and I'm not sure his heart is in it any more, I don't think he can have any complaints about his omission.

Got to feel sorry for Plunkett but it does make me wonder if not playing is more dangerous for a player than being forgotten about out in the middle.

With so many backroom staff I would imagine it's a minefield for a non playing squad player as there are so many judging attitude, approach, positivity, mental approach, interaction with the rest amongst other qualities and any perceived transgression will be discussed endlessly/

I have no knowledge or rumour about this but the decision is so baffling when you look at the type of cricketer he is and the type of pitches they will play on.

It must be very dispiriting for a player and I wonder how well the notification of such players is handled?

Good luck to Gary Ballance on his return and if Samit Patel could let us know his lottery numbers I would be grateful.

2 little steps forward - Ballance and Compton.
1 Giant leap backwards - Patel

Looking at the bowling I hope that both Anderson and Broad keep fit and that Footitt's found some pace or we are in deep doo-daa.

Can only presume Plunkett is being rested from being rested. My advice, go somewhere nice and sunny, forget about cricket for a bit, and get people to bring you drinks for a change.

Well Bell already seems to be a better player based on all the cries from Pietersen and co bemoaning his omission.

But it's time to move on and a brave call but the right one.

Usually England look to new players but I am pleased they have gone back to some who have been tried before and they come back stronger having had a first bite of the cherry and then worked on their weaknesses that had been exposed on the higher stage.

Compton and Ballance both have experience of South African conditions.

Patel being picked is just bizarre. Plunkett being omitted can only be explained at a later date when some misdemeanour is revealed. It can't be a decision based on performance so it must be something else. Utter bonkers. If Jordan, Woakes are better fast bowlers on hard fast bouncy tracks then the selectors need their heads looking at.

Rashid better off elsewhere as the Saffers would target him mercilessly and Cook would then not bowl him.

But as a back up spinner he is a better option than Patel, plus his batting is probably better too

I hope Ballance delivers if called upon, but not convinced this series is right for him.

Yes he has a decent record overall, though the majority of the runs have been against soft seam attacks. He was brutally exposed against better quality last summer.

Liam has probably been dispensed with because he was spilling the drinks when carrying the tray. His non-selection is certainly not based on his form, as he has not played. Patel will take over the drinks waiter job now.

Ballance will be fine if they pick him in his best position of 5, he is not a nr 3.
