Are Jennings & Leach (Som) unlucky not to be going?

I would say Leach can count himself unlucky to be over looked for the over excitable 39 year old Gareth Batty.

Good to see Haseeb Hameed given a chance and Bangladesh might not be the most difficult place to start a Test career, cricket wise at least.

Hameed is a bold selection and I'm pleased to see Duckett in both the test and ODI squads. Jennings is probably unfortunate considering the season he's had, but he's been fairly average up until this year. He may need to do it all again next season, when he'll be carrying Durham's batting.

I don't know anything about Hameed's fielding but I do know that Jennings is a very competent fielder in any position plus he brings the added value of being a parsimonious medium fast bowler.
The more strings to the bow the better as far as I'm concerned.
I cannot see the benefits of Batty over Leach, neither can bat & Leach has to be one for the future rather than Batty.
His selection is very short term, surely leach should have been selected with an eye to the future?
Or if it had to be an offbreak bowler why not Rayner? He again has the advantage of being an outstanding slip catcher & a better bat than either of the other two.

With tongue very firmly in cheek......

I assume Hameed will have to rest next week prior to the Bangladesh tour. He has played every week for the past 3 months!! Must be worn out!!

Maybe they want Leach to go on Lions tour so that he gets more game time? They're never going to play 4 spinners - so perhaps they want Batty for his experience to guide and mentor rather than play - whereas Leach will get more game time in the Lions team

I don't mind Batty's selection, I think England saw Moeen and Rashid going around the park in the UAE and offering no control for Cook and wanted a solid option should that happen again. I might have preferred Rayner rather than Batty but I can understand why England did otherwise.

I think the inclusion of both Hameed and Duckett is exciting; they're likely to be competing for the opening slot but could both play in the same side if they impress more than Ballance in the warm-ups.

I'm amazed that Buttler is in the Test squad- can only assume this is because he'll already be around having played in the one-dayers- and I'm unsure what Ansari brings- I don't think either his batting or bowling are remotely near Test standard. Cue a 5-for this afternoon...

Ansari looked very, very average.

Butler does seem a strange inclusion with 42 red ball runs in 11 months having only played 1 game in that time. Although I suppose there has to be a reserve keeper in the squad and if they're unlikely to play anyway then it seems silly to bring someone over especially for the role.

True- although Duckett can keep of course.

Don`t think Duckett will be competing for an opening slot, more likely to be as a replacement for Vince and/or Ballance along with Stokes at 4 & 5.

In answer to the original question in this thread, my view is that both Leach and Jennings are very unfortunate not to be selected. We are left to speculate as to why these decisions have been made because Whittaker when interviewed is not asked the relevant questions, for instance why select Ansari ahead of Leach, why select Hameed instead of Jennings.
Regarding Hameed I think he is a very exciting talent and in his first year of county cricket has done incredibly well. He is in many respects an old fashioned player with a correct defence, makes good use of the crease and seems to have excellent off stump judgement. He is also a right hand bat which fits well with the left handed Cook. It is certainly a brave choice because he is 19, has limited experience and has made many of his runs on a featherbed old Trafford wicket.
On the other hand Jennings has been around the county circuit for the last 3 years or so, was actually rested last year by Durham for his poor form but scored a century in the opening county game against Somerset and has never looked back scoring seven centurys, probably a county record,(at least two of these have been double centurys) and made over 1500 runs, by far the leading run scorer in the 1st division. As has already been said he is a very good fielder close to the wicket, can bowl a bit of useful medium pace, and has deputised for Collingwood as captain successfully. I just think he has done more than Hameed to deserve a call up, I'm assuming that Whittaker who covers the north of England would have seem them both regularly and would have taken soundings from Giles and Collingwood, and it would have been interesting to know why he went for the Lancastrian.
Regarding the spinners, I don't have a problem with Batty been selected despite his age. He is an off break bowler and his experience even if not selected for the team may be invaluable to the other younger spinners on the trip. However I am baffled how the left arm spin of Ansari gets selected ahead of Leach. Ansari was selected last year after a decent season in the 2nd division but had to pull out of the tour because of injury. He has not been successful this year I think taking only 20 odd wickets so is his selection based on loyalty. I have seen Leach 3 times this year and he looks like a genuine match winning left arm spinner, he certainly cant bat as well as Ansari and Leach seems to spend most of his time in the field down at long leg or third man so presumably is not a great field. However he is the leading wicket taker in the 1st division with 58 wickets and I would have thought with so many all rounders in the England side we could have found a place for a genuine wicket taking spinner. Australia manage to find a place for Lyons what is so different with Leach. I suspect its very much a Giles / Keedy situation from a decade ago, a real shame.

I think he (Duckett) could do either role- he's opened in the Championship all season.

Re Butler - press reports seem to suggest that Bayliss has been keen to play him in tests as a specialist batsman (which given his test average is 30 and his first class average is 32 seems absurd)but that the selectors have been resisting this.

Re Duckett - Atherton or Hussain said yesterday that Duckett would be in contention to open the batting particularly if Cook had to miss a test to come home for the birth of his child.

Duckett probably will open with Hameed then if Cook has to go home. I assumed he was selected more as a replacement for Vince and possibly Ballance(if he keeps failing). Stokes, I assume will also come in at 4 or 5.
