Re: CHAMPIONSHIP | Middlesex vs Yorkshire at Lord's (Day 1)

September 20 2016, 3:02 PM

Equally, Somerset messed up last week by not getting the 5th batting point. It was there for the taking and one or two injudicious shots rather than batting sensibly meant that they didn't manage to get the points.

Indeed, Peter, who would have thought it was worth stretching for another batting point in a couple of games....(facepalm)

I'm surprised Peter's mentioned the lost batting point.....................................................so late in the day.

Well done Bressie

Our best three slip catchers are Lyth, Lees and Brenan Bresnan with the missing Lehmann and Leaning next best, but surely not Ballsnce in there?! We need to pouch every chance to win this match and they surely will not drop many when we are batting. Unless we get more wickets before tea, the title will be slipping away with our flimsy top order - unless our top 3 score really big.

Come on! We are in a very good position going in to tea. Forget about dropped catches - nothing we can do about that. But we have every chance of finishing the day on top.

I would say its about evens at the moment.
Those 3 dropped catches are frustrating though.

This match is like a cup final. Everything must stick when chances come our way. Too many dropped catches. It's a metaphor for dropping the silverware too.

Long way to go yet.

Maybe the silverware will be the one thing that does stick.

Peter, surely the disastrous batting last week against Somerset was more damaging than a lost bonus point the week before (although I accept that batting point should have been achieved). Why only focus on one aspect of the game as a cause of a predicament? Dropped catches today, more damaging surely as well.

With the Somerset game going as it is, we may well need to get 350+ to match them on bonus points to keep us with a chance of winning the title (assuming Somerset go on to win).

Hopefully we can get Middlesex out for 250-270 from here, so getting to the 350+ would put us in a good position in this game too.

Not over, but we'll need to bat well...

How are we doing on the over rate? I see Rafiq got the obligatory overs immediately prior to tea.

Possible Collusion

September 20 2016, 3:58 PM

With Somerset looking set for a maximum point win, a draw will be no good to middlesex and they will have to win.

That being the case it would be in middlesex's interest to set yorkshire a target that they would have to go for. In order to get into that position yorkshire would have to still have a chance of winning the title. Given that somerset are set to score 400, the only way we can still be in the title hunt would be to score 400 ourselves.

So it might go like this.

middx 330 all out inside 110 overs
yorks 300-5 in 90 overs

now middx would need to gift yorkshire 100 runs, then they would declare and allow middx to set a target with the winner taking all.

if instead yorks finish on 350 all out, they would only be playing for second or third....would they be as committed to chasing a target?

Although not explicit in the rules, I suspect that gifting Yorkshire 100 runs for the purposes of giving the side extra batting points would constitute Unfair Play (Rule 42)

The noise (bat sound ) was evident to all, my bet is that it would have been given out if we have had referrals
